IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-MOLDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,622, dated October 29, 1872.

To-all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS 'H. Bone- FELDT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Mold; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- .Figure 1 represents a portion of the bottom of a cigar-mold containing my invention; Fig. 2 represents a like portion of the top; Fig. 3 is an end view of my improved mold looking toward the head end; Figs. 4 and 5 are portions of the bottom and top of the ordinary German mold, on which my invention is an improvement; and Fig. 6 is an end view of a German mold.

This invention relates to molds for forming bunches for cigars. The common German mold has its sockets open where the head of the cigar is formed, as represented in Figs. 4 and 6, and consequently the heads of the bunches formed in them are ragged and of an unfinished appearance.

I am aware that an attempt has been mad to form cigar-molds with closed ends at the parts where the heads are formed; but a special tool is required therefor and the expense attending the cutting of the sockets is materially increased.

My improvement enables me to use the ordinary cutter for cutting the sockets. Such cutter is supported in bearings at each end, and consequently cuts out a socket open at the head as well as at the tail, as is shown in Fig. 3, the cutter being reduced in diameter at the head end of the socket, so that. the out at that part shall be tapering in form to resemble the general appearance of the head of a cigar. My invention consists in providing a closed head for the socket by inserting or annexing a notched plug or plate of suitable dimensions, and securing it in place in the mold after the socket has been cut by the old method. I combine with the improved sockets thus formed dies whose extremities. are made sharp like the heads of such sockets, whereby form, so that it will form a mold-socket like those shown in Fig. 1, where, as will be observed, the tapering part of the sockets is succeeded by a cylindrical cut that runs out through the side of the mold-board. The soc ets are lettered B and their cylindrical parts are lettered G in the drawing.

Having cut out the sockets in the manner described, I proceed next to close them at their head ends by means of serrated plugs D,

which I place in the end of the socket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that the sides of its serration Will form continuations of the tapering sides of the socket. The plug is then sawn oft outside of the mold, thereby closing the socket at that end and forming thereat a solid head, the angle of the notch being symmetrical with the taper of the socket. In order to secure the notched head or plug in place, I apply glue or other adhesive substance to its sides, or the plug may be made to fit tight enough to keep it in place. The plug D may be in two parts, if desired, instead of one, and in some of the sockets I have shown heads composed of a divided plug instead of being in one piece.

In my improvement the segments E, which are fixed to the top F of the mold, and which fit into the mold-sockets to press the bunches, have points I) symmetrical with the heads of the sockets, so as to correspond at that part as well as at other parts with the shapeof the socket, thereby operating with the pointed head of the socket to give a sharp and symmetrical front to the head of the bunch, whereby the work of finishing the cigar is facilitated, and a more perfect article is produced. The segments of the ordinary German molds have blunt ends at the heads, as is illustrated in Fig. 5, which shows the top of a common mold.

I do not wish to restrict myself in the elongation of the socket to widening the mold-board at that part for the purpose of giving a hearing to the sides of the plug, as other means for supporting the plug may be used without departing from the principle of my invention; as, for instance, the plug may be fastened to the exterior of the mold-board, and it may also be made in the shape of a plate provided with notches forming the heads of the sockets, or may itself form the head thereof, which modification I consider to be within the scope of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A cigar-mold whose sockets are permanently closed at their heads by the fixed notched plugs or plates D D, so as to complete the shape of the-sockets at that end, substantial- 1y as described.
