A shown in Fig. 11 the cam frames are of channel shape in cross section with one end closed and this closed end has an inclined corner 27, which forms a cam. This closed end of each cam frame is adapted to cooperate with the closed end of the frame 21 for adjusting theside stretching member 28.
The upwardly projecting part 23 of each of the frame 21 has pivoted thereto a rack bar 29 the teeth of which are adapted to engage a cross piece 30, which forms part of a channel bracket 31 secured to the upright 3. As shown in Fig. f the rack bars engage slots formed in the upper edge of said cross piece 30.
The rack bars are adapted to be held with their teeth engaging the cross piece by means of a rod 32 carrying a pin 33, which en gages the upper edges of said rack bars, and said rod is provided with a guide 3% at its lower end which has sliding engagement with the bracket 31. The rod 32 is normally held with its pin in engagement with the rack bars by a spring 35. The upper end of the spring bears against a collar 36 loosely mounted on the rod and having its upper end engaging the bent over end 3 of the upright 3. The rod 36 passes through a keyhole-shaped opening in said bent end and the rod is provided with a flat portion for engaging the small part of this opening so as to hold the rod in its upper position, against the tension of the spring and with the pin 33 out of engage- V ment with the rack bars to permit said bars to be moved longitudinally so as to adjust the frames 21.
A pair of curved arms 37 is connected with the rear part of the main frame by the links 38 and the front ends of these arms are pivotally connected to the cam frames 25 by pins 89 passing through the reduced portions 40 of said cam frames. The upper ends of the arms are pivotally connected to the socket members 41 and these socket members receive the ends of the screw threaded shafts 12 which pass through the held against rotation in the part 3 ofthe upright 3. The upper ends of the shafts 4:2 are squared to receivethe key 15.
An arm 44 is pivotally mounted to the bracket 45 which extends forwardly from the upright 3 and the front end of the said arm carrying a roller 46 which is adapted to engage the underface of the instep support 47. This arm is rocked above its pivotal point by means of the shaft 47 having a squared portion engaging a screw threaded socket carried by the bracket 45 and having its upper end passing through the part 3 and provided. with a squared portion to re ceive the key 15. This shaft is provided with a collar 48 for engaging the arm 4-1; to move the'roller on said arm upwardly against the instep support to stretch the instep of the shoe. This support is provided with a pin 4-7 for engaging the slots 6 in the projections 5.
i The operation of the device is as follows The last is placed within the shoe and the heel frame adjusted to make the last 1% the shoe. The key is then placed on the shaft 12 and the same rotated to force the toe stretching means'9 into the toe. The key is then placed on shaft A? to move the arm 4:4: to adjust the instep support to stretch the instep. Then the key is placed on one of'the shafts 42, according to which side the side stretching member 28 is located. By raising the rod 32 the rack bars are unlocked and by rotating the shaft by the key both the cam frame and the side frame can beadjusted longitudinally to place the side stretching member 28 in its proper position. The frame 21 is locked by lowering the rod 12 so that upon further rotation of the shaft the cam frame will move within the frame 21 and thus press the shank 48 of the side stretching member 28 between the ends of the two frames and the pressure of the cam 27 against the inclined face of the shank will cause said member 28 to move laterally away from the side of the main frame.
It will thu be seen that the whole adjustment may be carried out from the exterior of the shoeso that it is not necessary to place the hands within the shoe.
When the locking rod 32 is in raised position the guide 3& will be raised so as to hold the rack bars above the cross piece 30 and thus permit free movement of the frames 21. a i

In an expansible shoe last, a main frame, a sliding frame fitting therein, a cam frame fitting in the sliding frame, means connected With the cam frame for moving the same from the exterior of the shoe, means for locking the sliding frame against movement from the exterior of the shoe and a side stretching member actuated by the movement of said cam frame.
4. In an expansible shoe last, a main frame having slots therein, a yoke frame slidably mounted in'said main frame and having slots therein registering with the slots in the main frame, a cam frame located in said yoke frame, pins on said cam frame extending through the slots, a side stretching member having its shank passing through one of the slots in each of the main and yoke frames, and having an inclined part thereon engaged by the cam of the cam frame, an arm pivoted to the main frame and having one end secured to the cam frame, a vertically movable shaft connected With the other end of said arm, a vertically movable rod and means associated With said rod for locking the yoke frame against movement.
5. In. an' expansible shoe last, a main frame, a toe stretching member, a longitudinally movable bar connected With said 'member,means for moving said bar including an upright shaft, a side stretching mem ber, means for adjusting the same both longitudinally and laterally, said means includ ing an upright shaft, locking means for holding the longitudinal adjusting means of the side stretching member stationary, said locking means including an upright rod, an instep support, means for adjusting the same, such means including an upright shaft, all of said shafts and rod being adapted to extend through the top of the shoe and a key adapted to engage the upper ends of the shaft for operating the same.
