Be it known that 1., CARL onnvirz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fxpansible Shoe Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe stretching means, the present invention being an improvemerit over that .forming the subject matter of a patent granted to me on May 211, 1921, No. 1,379,478.
The principal object of the presentinvention is to improve and simplify the construction of the device so that it will be more effective in operation and can be nianufactured at less cost.
Another object of the invention is to pio vide actuating means for adjusting the position of the heel member, with means for locking it in adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for shifting the instep stretching n'ieinber bodily so that said member can be moved against the instep of the shoe to stretch the same.
Another object of the invention is lo provide means whereby the side stretching meniber can be forced outwardly quite a distance from the side of the frame.

In these views 1 indicates the main frame which is provided with the intermediate contracted portion 1 for tting in the shank of the shoe. rllhe side bars of the frame are provided with the slots 2 and the rear of the frame is secured to the lower end of the upright 3, 'the major portion of this upright being of channel shape in cross section and the vfront part of the main frame is provided with horizontal anges 4- at its upper edges for a purpose to be hereinafter described. W'ithin the main frame is arranged an inner frame 5 which consists of a pair of longitudinally extending spaced strips 6 having their rear port-ions extending upwardly, as at 7 and their rear extremities connected together, as at 8. The frame also comprises the bottoni Hanges 9 and the up per flanges 10 which are bent outwardli7 from the front parts of the strips 6. tensions 11 are formed on the front ends of the strips 6 for engaging holes forn'ied in the front end of the main fran-ie. The flanges 9 form a bottom for the device and flanges 1G cooperate with the flanges et of the main frame and said flanges 9 for forming guideways for the actuating members of the side stretching parts. The strips 6 and extensions 7 form a guidewaiY for the longitudinally movable bar 12 which passes through the opening in the front cross piece of the main frame and is provided with a springv pressed pin 13 for holding the toe stretching member 141 upon the front end of this bar. The rear end of this bar is provided with a screw threaded bore which receives the screw threaded part of shaft 15, said shaft 15 is connected with the upright shaft 16 by the gears 17. Shaft 16 is carried by lugs 18. extending outwardly from the upright 1 3. The upper 4end Aci! the shaft 16 issqu'ared to receive the square socket in key 19. The toe stretching member and its actuating parts are similar to those described in the before mentioned' patent.
The means for actuating the side stretching members 20 consists of a rack member 21 and a companion member 22V arranged `on each side ot' the inner frame and slidably supported in `the yguideway formed .by flanges 9 and 10. Each-of .the members 21 and 22,:is provided -witha rightangularly .bent lend 23 extending across theguideway and engaging theilanges. Member/.22 isprovded. with a short dat part 24 for engaging the long flat part25 of. mernb'er21 and said member 22 has its major portion offset( laterally so that this part is spaced from member 21 to provide a space tor receiving `the loiverfend of the rocker arm 26 and this rocker .arm is pivotally secured to member' `Each rocker arm 26 is pivotally and .movably 'connected with the upwardly `curved portions 27 of the main frame by means of the pin 28 on the rocker arm engaging the arc-shaped slo-t 29..in the part 27. lT he upper end of each rocker iai-m l 26 is pivotally secured to a bracket 30 whifh is provided with a socket tor receiving `the lower end of a screw threaded shaft 31 which passes through the stationaryV nut32 on the horizontal part '33 of the upright 3. Tt will be seen that when the screw threaded shaft 31 is rotated by means of the key 19 theroclrer arm 2(3,will be moved bodily and at the same time rocked upon its. pivot so that the member 22 will be moved longitudinally. Thus member 22 will move along member 21 unt-il its bent end causes theprojection on the sid-e .member 2O to `act on the end 23 of member 21 when saidmember 21 will be carried along with Vthe member (ln the reverse movement. ot the parte Vthe member 22 `will slide on member 21 until the lug 37 is yengaged by the rocker arm 26 and then said member 21 will move with the member 22.. The projection on the side stretching member 2O is adapted to be placed through the slot 2 inthe main iframe and between the bent rends 23 of members 21 and 22. Thus the side member will be moved with the said members 21 and 22 and then by lowering the locking plate 3S into .engagement with the teeth on part 14- said member 21 will be prevented from movement while member 22 continues to move and thus forces the side member laterally to stretch the-shoe. In Figure 5 I- show a modification in which the ends of the toggle levers are pivotally secured to the ends 23. as .lat 242. This view also shows the side stretchinol member 20 as yreceiving cover 20 which may be formed to stretch the side of the shoe to make the shoe conform to the bunion or other deformity on the toot. these covers being made ot various shapes and are detachably connected with the member 202 as shown. The parts are so arranged in both -t'orms ot the invention that the side stretching member can be adjusted to its proper position inthe shoe .by moving both members 21 and 22 and then by locking member 21 against movement and moving the other member the toggle leverswill be expanded to force thestretcher member outwardly to expand the shoe. y

`movable plate 38. This tongue also provides a shoulder 44 for engagement by a projection 45 on the rock bar 46 which actuates the instep stretching member 47. This bar 46 is pivoted between the portions 7 of the inner frame and has an eye 46 at its front Vend for receiving the pivot pin which pivots it to the said instep stretching member 47. The rear end of the arm is enlarged, as at 48, and the upper edge of this enlargement is provided with a groove 49 for receiving the rounded end of the screw shaft 50. This screw shaft is mounted in the upright and is adapted to be actuated by the key 19. rlhus when the said shaft -is lowered its rounded end striking the bottom of the groove 49 will depress the rear end of arm 46 and raise'the front end and thus press the member 47 against the instep Yof the shoe. The parts will return to normal position by gravity when the shaft 50 is raised. The upward movement of the instep member is limited by the projection 45 striking the shoulder 44. lt will be seen that the instep member is moved bodily so that the entire front portion ot the instep of the shoe is stretched.
The heel frame 51 is ot substantially U- shape in cross section andV is provided with the forwardly projection rack arms 52 which pass through slots in the upright and engage the upper edges of the main frame and the outer sides of the portions 27, these parts acting as guides for the arms. A pair of levers 53 are pivotally mounted to the upright, as at 54, with their lower ends reduced and passing through slots in lugs 55 carried by the lower part of the heel frame. These levers have a limited movement in the slot-s ol the lugs so that the levers will move to a certain extent betere the movement is communicated to the heel frame. rlhe upper ends o1 the levers are bent at right angles from the pivotal point and a handle supporting member 56is pivotaliy mounted between -these ends by the pivot pin 57. These ends are provided with arc-shaped slots 58 through which passes a bolt 59 which is carried by the part 56. The handle 59 is connected with the part 56 by a pin and slot connection 60 and said handle having a notch 61 therein for engaging the pin 57. This arrangement et parts permits the handle to be moved into inoperative posiion as shown in Figures 1 and 2 or into operative position where it can be used to move the heel frame.
The heel plate is locked in adjusted position by means of the pawl carrying plate 62 which is slidably arranged at the rear of the upright and is provided with the outf wardly extending ears 63 provided with holes through which passes the shaft 16. A spring 64 mounted on said shaft tends to hold the plate with its pawls in engagement with the teeth of arms 52. i link 65 pivot-ally connected with member by the bolt 59 has its lower end hooked and passes through a slot in one oi the ears 63 so that 65 and the bottom oi the device is covered by a. plate 66 which has an ear 6"! at its front end passing through the hole in the front end of the main frame and an ear 68 at its rear end which engages a plate 69 forming a bottom for the heel frame, when the same is closed,l said plates 65 and 69 having ears 70 which are bolted to the rear end of the main iframe by the same bolts which connect the main :trame with the upright.
The operation of the device is substantially the same as that et' the device forming the subject matter ot the before mentioned patent.
rlhe device is placed within the slice with the heel frame in closed position and the other parts in contracted position. The heel frame is then adjusted by the handle 59 and its associated partsto make the device lit snugly in the shoe. The key 19, which is provided with a crank handle 19 is then placed on the shaft 16 to torce the toe stretching member' 14 into the toe to stretch the. same. The key is then placed on shaft 50 to rock arm 46 to adjust the instep inember 47 to stretch the instep ot the shoe. rlhen the ley is placed on one ci the shafts 31 to adjust the side stretching member to the desired position after which the plate 38 is lowered to lock the member 21 against movement and then shaft 81 is rot-ated to cause the member 22 to torce outwardly the side stretching` member te stretch the sidi, of the shoe. V
As will be seen either side ci' the shoe may be stretched or both sides by placing a side stretching member at each side ot the shoe.
All the operations are carried out troni the exterior ot the slice so that it is not neeessary to place the hands within the shoe.
The side plates and the bottoni plate will give the device the appearance oi an ordi-- nary last and at the same time protect the working parts trom dust and dirt.
That I claim is:
1. A shoe last of the class described comprising a main frame, a heel frame, a rack bar connected with the heel :trame and slidably supported in the main frame, a ratchet plate engaging said rack bar, a lever pivorally supported on the main fra-me and connected with the heel `trame, a handle Yfor rocking' the lever ior moving the heel frameA and means connecting the handle with the plate for lifting said plate out of engagement with the rack bar when the handle is manipulated to move the heel frame invrardly.
2. A shoe lastl oi the class described coinprising a. main frame, a rocker arm pivotally mounted thereon intermediate its ends an instep stretching plate pivotally connected to one end of the rocker arm. the other end oi the rocker arm being enlarged and having its upper edge curved and grooved. means vfor limiting the downward movement oi the enlarged end of the arm, a longitudinally movable shaft in the main frame having its end engaging the groove and a key 'tor actuating the shaft.
