SHEET COLLECTING AND ASSOCIATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Collecting and Associating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
In sheet collecting and associating mecha nism it is very difficult to hold the sheets in register on the collecting cylinder as the grippers open to collect the sheets and open to transfer the sheets. This is especially true where a number of sheets are to be 001- lected and associated and transferred and where the sheets are heavy.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means for insuring the proper holding of the sheets on the cylinder against slipping out of register while being collected, assoclated and transferred, said means including a rotary carrier having end and side grippers which cooperate to collect a number of sheets fed from one source, such, for 1nstance, as a source of main web sheet supply, extra sheets, such, for instance, as insert sheets being combined with certain of the main Web sheets as they are fed to said rotary carrier, said rotary carrier also combining extra sheets, such as cover shafts,- he
with the main web and insert sheets. side grippers serve to hold the sheets which are on the cylinder in register when the end grippers are opened to collect the main Web sheets and to transfer the associated and collected sheets to a delivery cylinder. The
side grippers open beyond the sides of the sheets as the grippers pass the collection and association and transfer points so as plane of plane of the line IV-1V of F g.-

Fig. 5 is a detail section showing one of the side grippers and one of its operating cams.
One or more webs pass over the web feed roll 1 and downwardlythrough the pair of coacting cutters 2, 3, and guides at, 5, to one of the three sets of grippers 6 on the combined main web sheet and insert associating and feeding cylinder 7. Extra sheets, such as insert sheets, are fed from the table 8 to the sets of grippers 6 at the proper times to be associated with the last mentioned web sheet or group of sheets to be collected. In the present instance, an insert sheet is fed from the table 8 to a set of grippers 6 every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 7. Extra sheets, such, for instance, as cover sheets, are fed from a table 9 to the set of grippers 10' on the cover feeding cylinder 11. In the present instance, a cover is fed to the set of grippers 10 every revolution of the cylinder 11.
The combined collecting and associating cylinder 12 is shown as provided with three sets of end grippers 13 and three sets of corresponding side grippers 14, the said side grippers being located a considerable distance back of their end grippers so as to engage the sheets about midway their length. The transfer cylinder 15 is shown as provided with a single set of grippers 16 arranged to take the collected and associated sheets from the cylinder 12 and transfer them to a suitable folding mechanism, indicated at 17, 18.
A fixed cam 19 is arranged in position to open the grippers 6 of the feeding cylinder to receive the main web sheets from the cutters 2, 3, and a fixed cam 20 is arranged in position to open the grippers 6 to transfer the main web sheets to their respective coacting grippers 13 of the combined collecting and associating cylinder 12. These grippers 6 are also provided with tumbler cams 21 which are operated every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 7 at the insert receiving point, by the movable pins 22, 23.
, The movement of these pins is controlled to bring them into and out of the path of the,
tumbler cams 21, by a rock lever 25 and its cam 24: on the shaft of the cylinder 15. The front stop. 26 for the insert sheets isalso operated ve y one nd onethird rev l tions of the cylinder 7, through a suitable connecting rod 26* and cam 24* on the shaft of the cylinder 15. The grippers 10 of the cover feeding cylinder 11, are tumbler operated, their tumbler cam 27 being actuated by the pins 28, 29, to receive the cover sheets from the table 9 and transfer them to their respective end grippers 13 on the cylinder 12. The cover sheet stop 30 is controlled by the cam 31 on the shaft of the cylinder 11.
A fixed cam 32 serves to open the grippers 16 on the transfer cylinder 15 to receive the collected and associated sheets from the cylinder 12 and a fixed cam 33 serves to open the grippers 16 to transfer the so collected and associated sheets to the folding mechanism 17, 18.
Each set of end grippers 13 on the cylinder 12 is opened by the engagement of the sta tionary cam 34 with the stud or roller 35 at one end of the cylinder 12, to collect the main web sheets fed from the cylinder 7, it being understood that the last sheet or group of sheets of each collection of main web sheets has associated therewith an insert sheet fed from the table 8 to the said cylinder 7. Each set of end grippers 13 is opened every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 12, by the engagement of the two-part movable cam 36, 37 with the gripper stud or roller 38 at the end of the cylinder 12, to first transfer its collected and associated main web, insert and cover sheets to the grippers 16 of the transfer cylinder 15, and to then receive and grasp a cover sheet fed from the grippers 10 of the cylinder 11. The part 36 these cams 47 being of sufficient length to of this two-part cam is operated by a cam 38 carried by the transfer cylinder 15 which engages a stud or roller 39 on the part 36. The part 37 of the two-part cam is operated by a cam 40 carried by the cover feeding cylinder 11 which engages a stud or roller 41 on the part 37. Springs 42, 43, serve to return the parts 36, 37 of the cam to their normal positions out of the path of the stud or roller 38 of the end grippers 13.
The side grippers 14 are held normally closed by springs 44 and are opened by the engagement of the stationary cams 45 with the gripper studs or rollers 46 as the side grippers pass the point where the main web; sheets are collected. The grippers are again opened by the engagement of the cams 47 with the gripper studs or rollers 46 at the point where the collected and associated sheets are transferred to the cylinder 15,
maintain the side grippers in their opened position until they pass the point where the covers are transferred from the cylinder 11 to the cylinder 12. This arrangement enables the side grippers to maintain absolute control of the sheets which are on the cylinder and prevent them from. slipping out of register.
From the above description it will be seen that when a certain set of end grippers 13 has been opened to transfer the collected and associated main web, cover and insert sheets-to the grippers 16 of the transfer cylinder 15, the end grippers are held open until they receive the cover sheet from the grippers 10 of the cylinder 11, when the end grippers are permitted to close on the cover sheet and carry it around into position to receive thereon the first part of the collection of main web sheets from the grippers 6 of the cylinder 7. The side grippers it will be observed, close on the cover sheet as the end grippers at each revolution collect additional parts of the main web sheets and at the final collection, before transfer, the end grippers take with the final part of the collection, an associated insert sheet.
.Vhile I have disclosed my invention as applied to a three-way collecting and assofor feeding extra and main web sheets from.
other sources and a combined collecting and associating cylinder having end and side grippers coacting to combine and collect thereon the said extra and main web sheets, the side grippers serving to close on and hold the sheets which. are on said cylinder as the end grippers are opened.

I

In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name, this 17th day of May, 1918.
