SHEET-COLLECTING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed October 3, 1917. Serial No. 194,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Collecting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
Insheet collecting mechanism it is very difiicult to hold the sheets in register on the collecting cylinder as the collecting cylinder grippers open to collect the sheets and open to transfer the collection of sheets. This is especially true where a number of sheets are collected and transferred and where the sheets are heavy. The object of my inven tion is to provide means for insuring the proper holding of the sheets on the cylinder against slipping out of register while being collected and transferred, said means including cooperating end and side grippers for engaging the sheets, the side grippers closing on the sheets at the times that the end grippers open both to collect and to transfer the collection, the side grippers opening beyond the sides of the sheets as they pass the sheet collecting and collection transfer point so as not to interfere with the passage of the sheets.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a portion of a sheet collecting mechanism illustrating my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a section taken ,in the plane of the line IIII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the side grippers and its support.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken in the plane of the line IVIV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken in the plane of the line V-V of Fig. 1. One or more webs pass over the web feed roll 1, through the pair of coacting sheet cutters 2, 3, and guides l, 5, to the sheet collecting cylinder 6. This cylinder may have one or-more sets of end grippers 7 and one or more corresponding sets of side grippers 8. In the present instance, I have shown three sets of end grippers and three sets of side grippers; the side grippers being located a considerable distance back of the end grippers so as to engage the sheets at a point about midway their length.
The cylinder 9 may be a folding cylinder and its set of end grippers 10 is arranged to take each collection of sheets from the end grippers 7 at the proper time. Each set of end grippers 7 is held normally closed by the spring 11; is opened to collect the sheets cut from the web or webs by a stationary cam 12; and is opened to transfer the collection to the cylinder 9, by a movable cam 13 brought into the path of the end gripper stud or roller 14 every one and onethird revolutions of the collecting cylinder 6, by a cam 15 carried by the cylinder 9.
The relative size of the cylinders 6 and 9 is such that a collection of sheets is transferred every one revolution of the cylinder 9 and every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 6.
The side grippers 8 of each set are pivoted at opposite ends of the cylinder 6, on brackets 15, the gripping fingers of the grippers swinging through slots 16 in the cylinder into and out of their sheet engaging position. The grippers are held normally closed by springs 17 and are opened by a stationary cam 18, which engages the gripper studs or rollers 19. The position and length of the cam are such that the side grippers are closed by their spring tension when the end grippers are opened by their cam 12 for collecting the sheets cut from the web or webs and also when the end grippers are opened for transferring thecollection of sheets to the cylinder 9, thus maintaining absolute control of the sheets at all times on the collecting cylinder and preventing them from slipping out of register.
The cam 18 serves to swing the side gripper fingers out beyond the sides of the sheets as the grippers pass the sheet collecting and transfer point to permit the side grippers to freely pass.
It is evident that one or more webs may be passed through the cutters and the sheets or groups of sheets collected and transferred.
While I have disclosed my invention as applied to a three-way collecting cylinder arranged to collect four sheets or groups of sheets, it is obvious that I do not wish to ]limit myself to this particular arrangement,
What I claim is:
1. Sheet collecting mechanism including a collecting cylinder having end and side grippers cooperating to collect the sheets thereon.
8. Sheet collecting mechanism including a collecting cylinder having end and side grippers, the side grippers serving to close on andhold the collected sheets as the end grippers are opened to receive additional sheets.
.4. Sheet collecting mechanism including a collecting cylinder having end and side grippers, theside grippers serving to close on and hold the collected sheets as the end grippers are opened to receive additional sheets, and also as the end grippers are opened to transfer the collection.
5. Web sheet cutters, and a collecting cylinder having end grippers arranged to collect sheets fed from the cutters, andside grippers arranged to hold the sheets-on the cylinder .as the end grippers are opened to collect.
6. Web sheet cutters, and a collecting cylinder having end grippers arranged to collect sheets fed from the cutters, and-side grippers arrangedto hold the sheets on the cylinder as the end grippers areopened to collect and also as the end opened to transfer the collection.
7 Web sheet cutters, a foldingcylinder, and a collecting cylinder having end grippers arranged to collect the sheets fed from the cutters and transfer the collection to the folding cylinder and side grippers arranged to hold the sheets on the collecting. cylinder as the end grippers are opened to collect.
8. Web sheet cutters, a folding cylinder, and a collecting cylinder having end grippers arranged tocollectthe sheets'fed from the cutters and transfer the collection to the folding'cylinder and side grippers arranged to hold-the sheets on the collecting cylinder as the end grippers are opened to collect and also as the end grippers are opened to transfer the collection to the folding cylinder.
9. Sheet collecting mechanism includinga collecting cylinder having cooperating end and side grippers arranged to alternately engage and hold successive sheets ofacollection on the cylinder.
10. Web sheet cutters, and a collecting cylinder having coeperating end and side grippers arranged to alternately engageand hold successive sheets of a collection on the cylinder.
11. l Veb sheet cutters, and a folding cylinder, a collecting cylinder having 006perating end and sidegrippers arranged to grippers arealternately engage and hold successive sheets of a collection on the cylinder, the side grippers serving to hold the collection as the end grippers are openedto transfer the collection to the folding cylinder.
"12. Sheet collecting mechanism including a collecting cylinder having cooperating end and side grippers arranged to alternately engage-and hold successive sheets of a collection on the cylinder, and gripper controlling means causing the side grippers to close as the end grippers open and vice'versa.
.18. Sheet collecting mechanism including a collecting cylinder having a sheet collecting point, meansfor feeding the sheets "to said collecting .point, aand end and side gripperson the cylinder coiiperating to-collect the sheets thereon, the side grippers-being arranged to-hold the sheets on the collecting'cylinderas the end grippers are-opened atthe sheet collecting point.
-14. Sheet.- collecting mechanism including a sheet collecting cylinder having asheet collecting and collection transfer point, means for feeding the sheets to said collecting point, and end and side grippers on the cylinder coiiperating to collect the sheets thereon and. to transfer the collection, the side grippers being arranged to hold the sheets on the collecting cylinder astheend grippers are opened atithe sheetcollecting and collection transfer point.
15. Sheet collecting mechanism including a sheet collecting cylinder having a "sheet collecting point, means for cutting sheets from a Web or Webs and for feeding the sheets to said collecting point, and end and side grippers on the cylinder co-actingato collect the sheets thereon, the side grippers being arranged to hold'the sheets [on the collecting cylinder as the endgrippers are opened .atthe sheet collectingpoint.
16. Sheet colleotingmechanism including a sheet collecting cylinder having ;a sheet collecting and collection transfer point, means for cuttin sheets from a "web ,or Webs and for feedlng'the sheets to saidcollecting point, and end and-side grippers on the: cylinder cooperating to collect the sheets thereon and to 1 transfer the collection, the
side grippers, being arranged to hold the HOWARD M. BARBER.
