UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD M. BARBER, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO C. B. COTTRELL & SONS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
Application filed January 31, 1918. Serial No. 214,758.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Collecting and Associating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
In sheet collecting and associating mechanism, it is very diiiicult to hold the sheets in register on the collecting cylinder as the grippers open to collect the sheets and open to transfer the sheets. This is especially true where a number of sheets are to be collected and associated and transferred, and where the sheets are heavy.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means for insuring the pwper holding of the sheets on the cylinder against slipping out of register While being collected, associated and transferred, said means including a rotary carrier having end and side grippers which cooperate to collect a number of sheets fed from one source, such, for instance, as a source of main web sheet supply, and to combine therewith one or more extra sheets, such, for instance, as cover sheets fed from another source; the side grippers servin to hold the sheets which are on the cylin er, in register, when the end grippers are opened to collect and to transfer the collected and associated sheets to a transfer cylinder, such, for instance, as a foldin cylinder. The side grippers open beyon the sides of the sheets as they pass the collection and transfer point so as not to interfere with the passage of the sheets.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of so much of a sheet handling machine as. includes my invention.
Fig. 2 is section taken in the plane of the line IIII of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a section taken in the plane of the line IVIV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing one of the side grippers and its operating cam.
One or more webs pass over the web feed roll 1, and downwardly through the pair of coacting cutters 2, 3, and guides 4, 5, to the combined collecting and associating cylinder 6. The cylinder may have one or more sets of end grippers 7 and one or more correspondin sets of side grippers 8. In the present instance I have shown the cylinder 6 as having three sets of end grippers and three sets of side grippers, the side grippers belng located a considerable distance back of their end grippers so as to engage and grip the sheets at about midway their length.
The cylinder 9 is an extra sheet feeding cylinder arranged to feed one or more extra sheets to each of the collecting and associating surfaces of the cylinder 6. In the present instance, this cylinder 9 is arranged to feed cover sheets to the cylinder 6 at the proper intervals, to be associated with the collected sheets thereon, as will hereinafter appear. The cylinder 9 is provided with a set of end grippers 10 arra ed to take the covers from a suitable fee table 11 and transfer them to the end grip ers 7.
The cylinder 12 may be a to ding cylinder and its set of end rippers 13 is arranged to take each group 0 collected and associated main web and cover sheets from the end grippers 7, as well as the last sheets of the collection from the cutters 2, 3, at the proper times.
The grippers 10 are tumbler operated and are closed to take the cover sheet from the table 11 every revolution of their cylinder 9, by the coaction of the tumbler cam 14 with the tumbler pin 15. The grippers 10 are opened to transfer their cover sheet to the cylinder 6 every revolution of the cylinder 9, by the coaction of the tumbler cam 14 with the tumbler pin 16.
The grippers 13 of the folding cylinder 12 are operated every revolution of the cylinder 12 by the fixed cam 17 to engage and gri the collected and associated main'web an cover sheets every one and one-third revolutions of the cylinder 6.
Each set of end grippers 7 on the cylinder 6 is opened by the engagement of the stationary cam 18 with the gripper stud or roller 19 at one end of the cylinder 6 every revolution of the cylinder to collect the sheets cut from the main web or webs, and is opened everyone and one-third revolntipns of the cyiinder It; by the en agefn'iehtloffthe two part movable cam 20, 2 with the gri per stud or roller 22 at the other end of t 0 cylinder 6 to first transfer its collcctiedahd associated main web and cover sheets to the grippers 13 of the cylinder 12 and to then receive and grasp a cover sheet fed from the "rippers 13 of the cover feeding cylinder 12.
he part 20 of this two part cam is operated by a cam 23 carried. by the foldin cylinder 12 which engages a stud or roller 4 'on the part 20;a nl the part 21- of the two pantcan is operated by a (Win25carried bythe qower fOQClBg cylinder 9 which engages a st ud'or roller 26 on the part 21. bprin s 27,, 28, serve to return the parts 20, 21, 01 the cam to their normal positions out of the path, of the stud or roller 22 of the. end grippers 7.
The side grippers 8 of each set of the cylinder 6 are piiloted at the opposite ends of the cylinder on brackets 29, the gripping fingers of the gril'ipers swinging through slots 30 in the cylinder into and out of their sheet engaging position. The grippers are held normally closed by springs 31 and are opened by the engagement, of a stationary cam 32 with thfe gripper studs or rollers 33. The position and length of the cam are suchthat the side grippers are closedby their spring tensionn'hen the end gri-pers 7 are opened to receive the main We sheets and also when they are opened to transfer, the collected and associated main Web and cover sheets tothe folding cylinder 12, thus maintaining absolute control-of the sheets which niay be on the cylinder 6 and preventing them from slipping out of register. The cam 82 serves to sWin theside gripper fingers out beyond the si es of the sheets as the side grip ers pass the points where the main Web, seetsand. the cover sheets. are taken as well as the point where.
the collected and associated main Web and. cover sheets are transferred to the folding cylinder;
From the above description it. will be seen that whens certain set of 'end grlipners, 7 on the cylinder: Ghas be? opene the we e t to tre e r t ll ts s associatedfmam web and, cover. sheets t3,

of thecylinder 9 when theendv grlppors are permitted to close on the cover. sheet an carry it. around into position; toireceive thereon the first part 0 the collection of main Web sheets, the side gripperssermng, to close on the cover. sheet as the end-grippers open to collect.
It will also be seen that as, the parts are shown, in, the accompanying drawings, the cover, she-cg feeding cylinder and the folding cylinder each rotate once for every one and one-third rotation of the collecting and associ'eti'n eyl inder.
While have disclosed my invention as a ip lied to a threeay collecting cylinder ar angc'd' to co'lle'c't four sheets or groups of sheets and associate a cover sheet therewith. itis obvious that I do not wish to limit myself to anticnlar arrangement.
