To all whom t may concern;
Be it kno-wn that I, SAMUEL S. SAMLINR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Uhm, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckscarfs or Mufflers and other Knit Goods,"of whiehthe following is a. specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in knitted articles of wearing apparel, and set forth .more lparticularly in connection with an improved neck scarf or muflier, with reference, as well, to other `garments wherein said invention may be employed.
Primarily, my invention relates to the provision in a knitted article 4of wearing apparel, Of an integral semi-elasticedge or border portion, in association with a more loosely knitted and ornamental central or body portion. The utilities of such semielastic border or edge are foundin the retention of the original shape of the article; the provision of more secure fastening means; a better lit for the knitted article, and straight edges adapted more readily to be stitched together.
My improvement contemplatesy primarily knitted fabrics produced upon the Lamb flat-knitting machine, wherein the central portion of the knitted article is racked and one or both edges are at the same time knit with the plain chain stitch. This produces a central body portion of looser and more elastic quality, having zigzag series of stitches integrally knitted with straight bordering edges of less elasticity and fnner body.
The principal use to which my invention has been put is in the manufacture of a knitted neck scarf adapted to fit closely about the wearers neck, by reason of the provision of associated bordering edges and an adiacent elastic section of zigzag stitches. The details of this, together with suggestions for other employment of my invention, will be more readily understood bv making reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure I is a plan view,broken away, showing the neck portion and one end of a neck scarf made in accordance with my invention. Fig. II is a full diagrammatic plan view thereof upon a smaller scale. Fig. III shows such neck scarf or muffler in use. Fig. IV illustrates in fragnientary detail, a modification in connection tion. `Throughout theseveral figures of the drawings, I have employed thesame character of reference to indicate similar parts.
Referring to Fig. I, itwill be "seenthat the muffler is integrally knit by havingthe central portion a `racked inlzigzalg pattern,`
while the integral "bordering edges b are knit perfectly straight, preferably withthe chain stitch, to secure a closer texture and make the bordering edges semi-elastic. Preferably, the neck portion is knitted with two diagonal sections c and a `connecting intermediate sectional, also racked and "integral with the 'straight bordering `edges It Awill be appreciated thatV this neck "porand over his collar, particularly at the rear thereof, by reason of the conforming elastic section Z and the close fitting edge Z), normally drawn closely about the wearers neck above the edge of said collar. This closely fitting neck is of distinct advantage, since they conforming neck portion guards the opening otherwise formed at the top Of a stiff collar. Moreover, the continuous edges f) maintain the muffler or neck scarf in shape, and may aord, as well, suitable fastening means in the firmer body thereof, as indicated in Fig. IV.
Any desired fastener, of course, may be employed, such as the snap fasteners e, shown in the different figures, either located at one side of, or within the body of the bordering edge. 'Ihe latter feature is illustrated in connection with the neck portion of a garment, Fig. IV, employing a plurality of such fasteners.
Another advantage may be explained in connection with Fig. V, wherein the knitted blank is utilized to form a tubular garment, such as an arm protector or sleeve, having an elastic body portion o, formed of the zigzag stitch, as before, with the straight edges l) sewed together. Previously, it has been necessary to make a zigzag seam in similar garments when the zigzag knitted blank was used, or else the seam was sewed straight and the serrated edges were afterward trimmed olf'. 'Ihe blank, Fig. II., is cut on line :i2-x, to form this article.
I believe that, prior to my invention, no
"tion "will fit better tiponitlie wearers neck i` garments had been made wherein the Zigzag or similar loosely flat knitted body por tion as opposed to tubularly knitted goods was integrally knit with a straight edge of closer texture, and accordingly claim as my invention, the following l.. In a neck-scarf or mullier, the combination-with twopatterned end-portions, of a neck-portion intermediate thereof, and elastically-knit, and bordering edges embracing the said neck-portion knitted with a semi-elastic stitch, substantially as set forth.
y2. In a knitted neck-scarf or muffler, the combination with two end-portions, of an intermediate neck-portion elastically knit, and a bordering edge therefor o-f semi-elastic stitch knitted integrally with the foregoing, substantially as set forth.
3. In aV continuously knitted neck-scarf or rmuffler,l the combination with two interiorly racked end-portions, of two diagonally extending neck-portions, and an in termediate interiorly racked neck-portion; the said racked portions being knitted with an elastic stitch, yand continuous bordering edges knitted with semi-elastic stitches embracing the` various portions of the mufiier, substantially as set forth.
4. In a neck-scarf or muflier knitted with elastic and semi-elastic portions, the combination with an inelastic or semi-elastic integrally knitted portion extending along the edge, of fastening means connected therewith adjacent to said semi-elastic edge and in the body thereof adapted to secure the elastic portion in position through the meeting semi-elastic edges, substantially as set forth.
5. In an integrally-lmit garment, a neckportion comprising two diagonally-knitted or offset sections and a straight intermediate rear section; the same having an integral Semi-elastic bordering upper odge and an adjacent elastic body-portion, substantially as set forth.
6. In a neck scarf or similar knit garment, a neck-portion formed of a straight rear section and two diagonally extending sections; said sections comprising a continuous bordering upper edge and a more elastic body-portion, integrally knit, and fastening means provided upon the bordering edge, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I do now affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
