Description

G. W. BROWN,
MATCH LIGHTER FOR FLUID BURNING APPARATUS APPLICATION FILED OCT- 21. 1918.
Patented Dec.,16,1919."
Fig. 5 Inventor GEORGE W. BROWN, 0F C A PE ELIZABETH, MAINE.
MATCH-LIGHTER FOR FLUID-BURNING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Application filed Gctocer 21, 1518. Serial No. 258,969.
conveniently lighting the apparatus in the open air, and closmg the openm'gthrough which thematch is introduced to the burner to exclude the air and jwind when lighted. For convenience, I have shown my invention applied to a lantern having an oil burner, but it may be applied in many cases to lamps and to burners.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of a lantern showing my improvements applied thereto: Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, partly in elevation, of the same: Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the same. the globe, cage and top being re moved Fig. 4: is a detail elevation of the same: Fig. 5 is a detail view of a modified form of my invention: Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the same, and Fig. 7 is a plan view of a blank from which the guide shown in Fig. 2 may be made.
The same reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures.
In said drawings, 1 is a base, 2 a tankholding case, 3 a tank. t a wick tube. 5 a wick. 6 a globe cage, 7 a globe. S a perforated cupola and 9 a handle. These parts may be of any style and convenient construction and alone form no part of my invention.
Various attempts have been made to construct devices with means for accomplishing the results aimed at, but so far as applicant is aware, none have been produced which have been very satisfactory or which have come into general use, although the want is real and means for supplying the want have been sought for a long time.
Applicant has conceived the idea of providing a somewhat extended scarifying surface secured to or supported by the tank or casing below the top of the burner tube, and terminating at a point ad acent the receiv ing end of a guide leading to a point at or near the top of the burner tube. Applicant has iound it of the reatest importance that there may be a somewhat extended scantying surface so that a quick movement of the match thereover 'Wlll serve to ignlte 1t and so arranged that, when ignited, 1t may be in position to be directly guided to the burner tube inside the globe. Having these necessary 'cond1t1ons 1n View, reference Wlll now be made to the accompanying drawings.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and l, a scarifier 10 is applied in any convenient manner to the outside wall of the tank and the casing is. provided with a slit or opening 11 arranged .to register with the scarifier. Above the .top of the scarifier is a match guide 12, its
upperend terminating-at a point adjacent the burner tube. T he scarifier, match guide, and opening in the casing are so positioned that a match inserted through the opening and moved in contact with the scarifying surface is lighted and the continued movement of the lighted match controlled by the guide impels the ignited match into position to light the device. The guide may be supported in any convenient manner. As shownin Figs. 1 to 4:, it is supported upon the burner tube and may be formed from ablank such is shown in Fig. 7, formed by bending the intermediate part 13 around the burner tube and bringing the ends 1% together in an inclined position relative to the scarifier thus forming an open guide way or trough. To prevent the air passing through the slit to the flame, I provide a slide 15 which may oe moved over and close the slit after the device is lighted. For 0011- venience. the casing adjacent the slit is provided with a recess adapted to receive a knob 16 on the slide.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a modified arrangement of my device. In this case, the scarifier is removably mounted in a tube 17 attached to the casing. Secured in any convenient manner to the top of the scarifier and carried thereby. is a match guide terminating adjacent the wick as before. The casing adjacent the scarifier is likewise provided with a slit which is adapted to be closed by a vertically movable slide 18. The
slide, when raised. is free to move laterally to enable the knob to pass into the recess sing and hold it up. 7 It 1s to be noted that any arrangement which embraces an exposed scarlfymg sur face leading to a match guide and so arranged that a match can be applied thereto with a quick movement and continued, after being ignited, through a match guide to the burner is Within the spirit and scope of my invention.
It is also to be noted that the match guide may be omitted when the distance from the scarifier to the burner tube is so short as to render a special guide for the match unnecessary.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a fluid burner, a burner chamber and a supporting case provided with a substantially vertically eX'tend ing slit, of an extended scarifier mounted in said slit, wherebya match may be passed quickly over the scarifier and'thence in a substantially vertical direction on to the burner.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a fluid burner, a
burner chamber and a supporting case provided Wlth a substantially vertically eX- tending shtterminating in an opening leading into said chamber, of an extended scarifier mounted in said slit, whereby a match may be passed quickly over the scarifier and thence in a substantially vertical direction on to the burner and means for closing said opening.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a fluid burner, a burner chamber and a supporting case provided with a slit therein, a match guide leading from said scarifier to said burner, of a scarifier mountedin said slit, the receiving end of the match guide being positioned to receive the match as it passes in a substantially vertical direction from the scarifier.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a fluid burner, a burner chamber and supporting case provided with a vertically extending slit terminating in an opening into said chamber, of a scarifier mounted in said slit and a match guide interposed between said scarifier and said burner and means for closing said opening into the chamber.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature.
GEORGE IV. BROWN.
