lMPROVEMENT INv HORSE-COLLAR CAPS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 132,515, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom yit may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD J. ALGEo, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collar Caps; and I do declare that the f'ollowing is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved collar-cap 5 Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame alone; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line a: in Fig. 1.
Like letters referto like parts in each igure.v
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of sheet-metal caps for collars; and has for its object to preserve the saddle-like form of the cap and to enable it to resist the pressure of the hames, and to this end it is secured at the edges to ametallic skeleton frame. The invention consists, first, in the peculiar construction of a sheet-zinc collar-pad, secured to a skeleton frame of cast or malleable cast-iron, second, in the peculiar form of said frame; third, in the interposition, between the said cap and the frame, of a backing or filling of rubber, leather, or canvas,-
for preventing the cap from being heated by the suns rays and causing it to chate or gall the horses neck in hot weather.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet-zinc collar-cap, in the form ot a miniature saddle. B is a light rim or frame, of cast or malleable iron, or other metal, with a longitudinal girder or stii'ening-web, B. The frame is shaped to the contour and outline of the cap A, to which it is secured at intervals by rivets a; but between said cap and frame is interposed a-backing, D, of leather, canvas, or other suitable material, which is thereby held in place, the object of which is to prevent the heat of the sun from striking through the cap, causframe B resists this pressure, and keeps the edges of the sheet-metal cap from being bent at these and all other points. The girder B 4serves a double office-first, in giving the frame the requisite strength and stiffness 5 and secondly, as the hanne and collar straps draw across the top of the pad, it takes their friction and relieves the cap and backing from their stress and wear.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire -to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The metallic pad-frame B Bf, constructed as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the pad-frame B B', of the sheet-zinc collar-pad A, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the zinc pad A and frame B B', as described, of the leather or other backing D, as and for the purpose set forth.
