Description
I H. POLLEY. I v Improvement in Sash-Holders..
N0. 132,490. .Patentedflci. 22,- 187-2. I Z
HENRY POLLEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO,
PATENT OFFICE.
CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ANTHONY ROSENFIELD, OF SAMEZ PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,490, dated October 22, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PoLLEY, of San Francisco city and county, State of Galiforuia, have invented an Improved Sash- Binder; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of looks or binders for windows and like sashes in which one stationary and one movable clamp are employed to hold or look the sashes in position by compressing them together from opposite sides. My improvement consists of a novel, convenient, and effective device for operating the movable clamp in order to force it against the sash and thus lock or hold them.
In order to more fully explain my invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of parts of the binder.
A represents the metal frame, which is countersunk in-the face of the casing transversely to the movement of the two sashes, and in the proper position to lock both sashes together at whatever height they may be raised. At one end of this frame is an outward-projecting lug, b, which forms the outside stationary clamp, while the opposite or inside end is raised so as to form a suitable seat, 0, through which the set-screw 61 passes at right angles to the frame. The frame consists of two parallel bars, between which is a wide slot, as shown, and the under side of the bars are rabbeted on their inner edges so as to form ways. A narrow plate, f, has one end, j, which is wider than the plate itself, turned up at right angles, so as to form the opposite or movable clamp. Short lugs e e extend outward upon the opposite edges near the lower side of this plate, so that when the end j is brought up through the slot and turned so that its projecting ends rest upon the opposite parallel bars of the frame the lugs e 6 will fit in the rabbet or slide below and serve to guide the plate in its movements back and forth. A bell-crank, K, has the extremity of one of its arms provided with trunnions l l, and these trunnions rest in recesses on the opposite side of the frame near the seat 0, so that the opposite arm of the crank passes under the seat and end of the set-screw d. Now, when the clamp is in place in the casing of the window, and it is desired to lock the two sashes together, it is only necessary to turn the screw inward so as to press upon the arm of the bellcrank beneath. This causes the bell-crank to turn upon the trunnions eccentrically and crowd the movable clamp against the inner sash, thus binding the two together.
I am aware that a simple cam has been used for forcing the movable clamp against the sash, but the pressure cannot be regulated by it, nor the device operated with ease. With my screw and suspended bell-crank the pressure can be regulated as desired and with great ease, while there is no danger of the pressure being removed by the shifting of a cam, as in the ordinary arrangement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The frame A with its fixed clamp Z2, and the movable 'platefwith its clamp j, in combination with the suspended bell-crank K and set-screw (Z, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose above described.
2. The frame A having its parallel bars rabbeted on the inner edges of their lower sides, in combination with the movable plate f with its lugs e c, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
- HENRY POLLEY. [L. s.]
