Vhave invented a new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Folding Boxes5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description o f the saine.
This invention relates to folding boxes; and its object, stated briefly, is to provide an improved article of the type indicated which, contrary to the usual construction, may be Ymade with one, two or even three of itsside walls of multiple thickness, there by aifording sufcient strength to enable said. walls to sustain the weight of articles placed on top of the box. I
The invention resides primarily inthe particular construction and arrangement of the component parts of the-box in such a.
manner as to produce the multiple-ply feature above referred to and, also, to. permit the assembling andr connecting ot said parts easily and comparatively rapidly, andv with-v out requiringthe services of a skilled operator.
Several embodiments of theinvention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Referring more particularly to the draw.- ing, l, 2 and 3 indicate the three main parts or members of the box., viz: the 4folding, strip, the body member and the cover blank, respectively, all of which are constructed ofk suitable sheet material. The body 2 forms the vertical walls lof the box and comprises the a skeleton rectangle, the ends of thev strip or blank from which this member is constructed being either joined together to completely close the rectangle, as in' Fig. 1, or

and 34, and respectively constituting, either partly or wholly, the front, bottom, rear and top walls of the box are here shown; and inaddition, the strip or blank may alsov comprise an extension or flap 35, forming. a continuation of the sectiont, for coactioii with the front or right-hand section or inember 3 of the blank.
The box represented in Fig. 6 isconstruct-y ed substantially as follows: vThe cover strip 3 is folded. along its scorelines or thelikeand applied to. the body 2 in such: a manner that the coverVv section 34 will loverlie thek topof the body, the sectionI 33 will lit against the inner` face of the rear wall of the body, the section 32 will underlie the bottom edge of the body, and the sectioii3 willfbe dis# posed exteriorly of the body and opposite thek outer face of the front Vwall thereof.

In the construction shown in Fig. 4, however, the bottom portion 32 of the blank 3 underlies instead of overlies the main porytion l of the folding strip, which latter is placed within the partially-completed box in the ordinary way, the two constructions being otherwise the same.
'I'o support the flap 35, there is provided a lug or tongue`4, which is preferably disposed centrally and transversely of the member 3 of the blank or strip 3 and which may be formed by slitting the free edge of thatl member (Figs. 8 to 11), though it may, if desired, be constructed in various other ways. In Figs. 4 and 11, this tongue is bent upwardly and backwardly against the innermost section or fold of the member 3 y so as to lie immediately beneath iiap 3 and hold it in place, as will be understood; while in Fig. 12, it is formed by a separate piece or part which is secured obliquely to the aforesaid section or fold in position to effect the desired engagement with the flap 35. In Fig. 13, the tongue is shown as formed as an extension of said fold or section which is bent back into oblique relation thereto and which acts in the same manner as the tongue in Fig. 12. In Fig. 14, the tongue is bent in the same way as in Fig. 13, but is long enough to form a recess or pocket into which the Hap 35 projects, the free end or terminal of the tongue being bent laterally outward so as to underlie the top member 34. Much the same construction is also adopted in Fig. 16 excepting that the pocket or recess is of U-section instead of V-section. In Fig. 15, the construction is generally similar to that shown in Fig. 11, but the tongue in this case forms an extension or prolongation of the section or fold of the member 3, instead of being produced by slitting said section.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a folding box, the combination of an open or skeleton body member;v and a cover strip cooperating with said body to Y form the bottom, rear, top and front walls of the box, said strip comprising a horizontal member extending across the opposite lower edges of the body to close the bottom thereof, a vertical member extending upwardly against the inner face of the rear wall of the body, a movable horizontal member extending from the upper end of said vertical member and terminating at the front wall of the body so as to close the top of the body, and a vertical member extending upwardly from the front end of the bottom member along the outer face of the front wall of the body and having its uppery portion folded over the upper edge of saidy front wall and bent inwardly and downwardly against the inner face of that wall for nearly the entire height thereof; substantially as described.
2. In a folding box, the combination of an open or skeleton body member; and a cover strip cooperating with said body to form the bottom, rear, top and front walls ofthe box, rsaid strip comprising a. horizontal member extending across the opposite lower edges of the body to close the bottom thereof, a vertical member extending upwardly against the inner face of the rear wall of the body, a movable horizontal member extending from the upper end of said vertical member and terminating at the yfront wall of the body so as to close the top of the body, and a vertical member extending upwardly from the front end of the bottom member along the outer face of the front wall of the body and having its upper portion folded over the upper edge of said front wall and bent inwardly and downwardly against the inner face of that wall for nearly the entire height thereof;4 said top member having an extension flap at its free front edge which projects downwardly into the interior of said body, and the infolded portion of said front member having means for supporting said flap; substantially as described.

In a folding box, the combination Vof an open or skeleton body member; a cover strip cooperating with said body to form the bottom, rear, top and front walls of the box, said strip comprising a horizontal member extending across the opposite lower edges of the body to close the bott/om thereof, a vertical member extending upwardly against the inner face of the rear wall of the body, a movable .horizontal member extending from the upper end of said vertical member and terminating at the front wall of the body so as to close the top of the body, andA a vertical member extending upn wardly from the front end of the bottom member along the outer face of the front' wall of the body and having its upper por- Y against the under face of the bottom member of said cover strip and its end portions bent vertically upward against the outer faces of the side walls of the body and folded over the upper edges of said side walls and then bent inwardly and downwardly against the inner faces thereof; substantially as described.
4. In a folding box, the combination of an open or skeleton body member; a cover strip cooperating with said body to form the bottom, rear, top and front walls ofthe box, said strip comprising a horizontal member extending across the opposite lower edges of the body to close the bottom thereof, a vertical member extending upwardly against the inner face of the rear. wall of the body, a movable horizontal member extending from the upper end of said vertical member and terminating at the front wall of the body so as to close the top of the body, and a vertical member extending upwardly from the front end of the bottom member along the outer face of the front wall of the body and having its upper portion folded over the upper edge of said front wall and bent inwardly and downwardly against the inner face of that wall for nearly the entire height thereof; said top member having an exten-Y sion ap at its free front edge which projects downwardly into the interior of said body, and the in-folded portion of said front member having means for supporting said flap; and a folding strip arranged Vat right angles to the cover stripand having its bottom portion disposed against the under face ofl the bottom member of said cover strip and its end portions bent vertically upward against the outer faces of the side walls of the body and folded over the upper edges of said side walls and then bent inwardly and downwardly against the inner faces thereof, substantially vas described.
