Application filed May 10, 1919. Serial No. 296,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA F. BARRI, a citizen of the United States, residingat Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Supporting Clasps, of which the following is a specification. V 1 V This invention relates to hose supporters and more particularly to a means for clasping and retaining the stocking to the supporter. V One of the principal objects in view is the provision of a clamp or claspcomprising a pair of mating' members having relatively wide engaging portions whereby to distribute the strain over a large surfaceof the stocking in order to prevent tearing of the same. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described which will be more comfortable to the wearer and which will eliminate the use of a plurality of supporters for each stocking.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means on one of the elements which co-acts with the other element to prevent casual displacement of the clamp from the stocking when the pull on the same is released as is the case when the wearer assumes a sitting position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described which is of simple construction, in-' expensive to manufacture and which is thoroughly reliable and efficient in purpose.-
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be readily apparent from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in its applied position.
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the dc vice removed from the stocking.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3. -3
of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the usual elastic supporter to which the clasp is attached by means of the link-loop 11. The clasp comprises a flexible tape 12 which is passed through the slots 13 and 14 of a base member 15, the latter being preferably conpose; A clamping portion 16 is formed on the base member 15 or secured thereto in any preferred manner tolprovi delan up standing wall 17 havingan overhanging rounded flange'lS andll lterally extending projections or wings 19, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. A clamping bail 20is secured to the flexible tape 12 adjacentto its uppermostend-and is provided with a clamping portion 21 which is preferably corrugated as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The p01? tion 21 is adapted to clamp the upper end Specification of Letters Patent. LPafie nt-gfl D 9, 1 9 19,
- st1 'ucted ofmetal, f-c'elluloid' or any other Y suitable material which will answer theqpurof the stocking against the wall 17 and the side branches 22 of the bail are adapted to co-act with the'wings l9 inorder toprevent casual displacement or release of the bail .when the same is arranged in its clamping position on the stocking, Normally, the
strain exerted on the bail tends to force the same against the wall 17 when the wearer is in an upright position but when in a sittlng position, the elastic becomes slack and for this purpose the side projections or wings 19 function to frictionally retain the bail against displacement; said projections or wings being resilient] If desired,
a slide 23 may be employed for the purpose of crowding the side branches 22 of the bail against the projections or wings by sliding the same toward the will be readilyunderstood.
What is claimed as new is r 1. A clasp comprising a flexible suspendmg element, afbase carried thereby, a long may be reclamping portion fixed with respect to and extending lengthwise from a point adjacent to one side edge of the base to a portion adjacent to the opposite'side edge thereof and having a lip spaced from the face of the base and also having resilient projections that extend laterally beyond the ends of the lip and the side edges of the clamping portion,
I and a broad and open bail connected with the flexible element and having an outer transverse clamping end portion, and also having side clamping portions adapted to be opposed to and yieldingly held by friction to the resilient projections at the ends of the clamping portion.
2. A clasp comprising a base, a clamping portion fixed to and extending from the face of th base and having a li spaced from the face of the base and also having projections extending beyond the ends of said lip, a flexible element to suspend the base, and a broad, open bail connected to the flexible element and having a transverse portion to cooperat with said lip and also having side portions to clamp a stocking against the said projections.
' 3. A'elasp comprising a base, a clamping portionfixed to and extending from the face of the base and having a lip spaced from the face of the base and also having projections extending outwardly beyond the ends of said lip, and a broad, open, swinging bail associated and connected with the base and having a transverse portion to cooperate with the lip and also having side portions to cooperate with the said projections; said bail in its working position receiving the clamping portion to enable its side portions to cooperate with said projections and its end portion to cooperate with the clamping portion Within said link.
A clasp comprising a base having an aperture adjacent to its outer end, a clamping portion fixed to and extending from the face of the'base and having at its outer end a transverse lip spaced from the face of the base and-also having resilient projections extending beyond the ends of said transverse lip, aflexible element to suspend the base; said element having a loop passed through said aperture of the base and also having a portion arranged opposite said lip, and a broad,.o'pen, bail connected with the flexibleelenient at a point remote from the base and having a transverse portion to 'cooperate with said lip and also having'side portions to clamp a stocking against the said projections.
In testnnony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
