IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBE-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. `132.471, dated October 22, 1872.
To all/whom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KIRKUP, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Globe-Valves, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
Figure l is partially sectional elevation of a globe-valve77 embodying my invention, the parts being in conditionfor regrinding. Fig. 2 shows my valve and valve-stem with its guideeollar.
A represents the globe7 or valve chamber, having a customary valve-seat, B. C is the neck of the valve-chamber, having its inside smooth and provided with a counter-bore, D, to receive a gland or collar, E, whose orifice c snugly encircles the periphery of the thread j' of the valve-stem F. The threaded portion f of the valve-stem occupies the threaded orice g of nut G, whose lower end is counterbored and screw-threaded, y', to screw down upon the eXteriorly-threaded neck C. H are guidewings on the bottom of the conical valve I, which wings occupy and t snugly Within the cylindrical aperture J of the valve-seat. K is the cap of customary stuffing-box.
Operation.
To regrind the valve the nut Gis unscrewed from the neck, as shown in Fig. 1. The stem may then be rotated to and fro by means of its handle, the gland, meanwhile, holding it erect. Ihe valve having, by this means, been ground true, is restored to its working condition by simply screwing down the nut G.
Claim.
I claim as new and of my invention.
rlhe guide-Wings H below the valve I, and the guide-ring E surrounding the threaded neck f oi' the valve-stem, in combination with the said valve I and with the sockets D and J, al1 constructed and arranged as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
WM. KIRKUP.
Witnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
