To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILTON V. \ViN'rEn- MUTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Leaves for Sewing-Machines; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to sewing machines. It is one of the objects of the present invention to improve the general utility of the ordinary sewing machine having the usual top with drawers depending from the ends, and the invention may be incorporatedwith those types of sewing machines having disappearing frames which are concealed by a hinged or swinging cover, and may also be utilized with the types of machines having fixed machine frames and removable box covers. It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide for the ready attachment of a supplemental leaf or table extension, for instance to the tops of sewing machines of the types above indicated or to other convenient supports. Another object of the invention is to provide for the attachment of a supplemental leaf or table to sewing machines in a facile manner without requiring any alteration to the machine structure, and without making any permanent attachments thereto, and it is a further object to provide means which are simple, substantial, inexpensive and readily adjustable and which are adaptable to engage sewing machines or the like supporting parts of various proportions and extraordinary de-' sign; it being in other words an object of the invention to provide a supplemental leaf or table attachable to a variety of convenient supports. 7

Ordinarily sewing machines of the well known type are provided with hinged covers which may be extended usually to the left hand end of the machine, these covers having the principal purpose of closing the aperture in the top of the machine through which the machine frame is adapted to be lowered and over which the cover may be folded when the machine is not to be used. from the opposite or right hand end of the machine top and to afford an extra and convenient working or supporting surface, which may be utilized to hold the extra materials and accessories incident to the use of the machine, and which will give a considerable working surface for laying out, cutting and basting of materials, and will give a convenient surface for the plaiting, etc., of skirts, which can be slipped over the overhanging supplemental table without interference from any supporting braces or structure, as for instance legs or other extensions from the machine casing. This extra surface also may be utilized for press ing and sponging or ironing and indeed may be utilized when desired for a writing, reading, or game table, or any other purpose for which it may be adapted.

Therefore with the above objects and pun poses in view, the invention consists in the combination, the construction and in details and arrangements of the parts as will be more fully described in the followin specification relativeto the embodiment of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying, drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device as attached to the right hand end of a sewing machine;

Fig. 2 is an underneath perspective view looking toward the front edge of the table and showing the machine top in dotted lines.

Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the table and top.

In the drawings, a sewing machine M is illustrated as having a top T below the ends of which extend the usual series of drawers D, the machine in this instance having a downwardly swinging machine frame F which may be concealed by the usual cover C hinged at H and adapted to be folded over the somewhat raised bed or portion B, the top face of which is flush substantially with the upper face of the unfolded cover C.

One of the features of the prescnt'inveir tion is to provide a supplemental table or leaf 2 of any suitable width and length and outline in plan which may be readily attached to the right hand portion of the top T for instance, which extends but a short distance behind the adjacent transverse edge of the bed B, the object being to afford an additional table or support surface at the right hand end of the machine for the va rious purposes above generally referred to.

in order that the supplemental table may be utilized when the cover C is foleedover the top of the machine, as well as when it is unfolded to the position shown in Fig. 1, the top surface of the supplemental table 2 is preferably disposed. in a horizontal plane slightly above the upper plane of the bed B so as to be substantially a continuation thereof when the machine is in use with the frame F set as in Fig. 1, and the table 2 may also be utilized when the cover H is folded inwardly to conceal the machine fran F so that in this instance the upper surfaces of the cover 0 and the table 2 are approximately in the same level.

In carrying out my invention in the illustrated form, the table 2 is, shown as provided at one end with transverse cleats or means for spacing it, one of which is inclicated at 3 and the other at 4, the latter being nearer the end of the table 2, which. is for purpose of economy, and for saving weight may be relatively thin, the spacing members 3 and e serving to bring the top plane 01"- the table 2 to the desired level with respect to the top of the base B. A simple, substantial inexpensive means for readily attaching the supplemental table 2 to the machine top T is shown as embodying set of claws, one designated as 5, which is pivoted at 6 upon a pin or other suitable pivotal device, which is transversely inserted across the cleat 4, the end of which is slotted at 7 to receive the pivotal end of the claw or hook 5, while tie complementary and opposed hook is shown as comprising two parts, one of which is designated as S and which is in the form of a claw a tubular hub 9 adapted to slidably fit upon the threaded shank 10, which is pivotcr upon a bolt or screw 11 which is adjustable into one or another of a series of transverse apertures 12 in the cleat i, which is shown as longitudinally slotted at 13 to receive the eye is of the shank 10 which is fitted around the pivot belt or scr i 11.

As the front and rear edges of the machine to T may assume various outlines in the designing of the casing of. the machine, it is preferable that the hook or claw members 5 and 8 be of such shape as to readily adapt themselves to the variously shaped edges of the top of the machine, and in the present case the shank 10 on which the adjustable hook end 8 is mounted is curved as at 10 so as to permit the hook or claw portion 8 to be swung to the desired position and grapple beneath the edge of the top T.

As the end edge of the base B frequently assumes an o ee or inclined form, the adjacent edge or the table 2 may also be inclined in the opposite direction as at 2 to permit the relatively close adjustment of the edge 2 up against the adjacent transverse edge of the bed B of the machine.

From the above it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple, practicable device, which may be quickly at tached or removed as is desired, and one in which the pil -17S when adjusted upon the table top or other supporting part may be substantially secured in position and may be subjected to considerable pressnreuoon its overhanging portion. since the fastening hooks ar claws are disposed relatively near to one transverse edge of the table while the remaining portion of the means or. part of the table resting upon the top T is firmly supported by downward and direct pressure on to the top T. any tilting movement downwardly of the project ing end of the table 2 being coui'iteracted hy the fastening means at the end of the table which overlaps the top T.

What is claimed is:

1. The combination with a sewing mt chine having a top with a raised plate or bed part; of a supplemental table attached to and resting upon one end ot'the top and having its top plane approximately in the top plane of the bed part, so as to form. substantially, a continuation thereo and means for detachably securing the table to the top, including claws pivoted in the table and shaped to reach around the front and rear edges of the top, one of the claws including a threaded stem and a bill slidablc thereon, and nut behind the hill.

2. The combination with a sewing machine having a top *ith a raised plate or bed part; of a supplemental table attached to and resting upon. one end of the top and having its top plane approximately in the top plane of the bed part, so as to form,

substantially, a continuation thereof, means.

for detachably securing the table to the top. and including claws pivoted in the table and shaped to reach around the trout and rear edges of the top, one of the claws having apivot adjustable toward or from one edge of the table.
