Description

F. PIRLOT.
PL'OW.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-22, l9l9'.

2 SHEETS-SHEET I- auwntoz F Rirla? alter/Mg FREDDIE PIRLOT, 0F WILSON, MICHIGAN.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. 9, 1919.
Application filed January 22, 1919. Serial No. 272,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDDIE PiRLo'r, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to' plows of the type embodying a point and wings, laterally adjustable on the point; and it has for its general object to provide simple, inexpensive and easily operated mechanism through the medium of which a farmer is enabled to quickly adjust the wings toward or away from each other and adjustably affix the wings in the positions in which the same are placed.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction, hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the plow.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 44 of Fig. 3 and showing in detail the adjusting and adjustably fixing mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention I employ a beam 1, and a standard 2, fixed in inclined position to the rear portion of the beam. I also prefer to employ the ordinary well-known handles 3.
In furtherance of my invention a plow point 4 is fixed upon the lower portion of the standard 2 so as to straddle the standard, and to the edges 5 of the point, wings 6 are connected in hinged manner, so that such wings may be swung laterally toward and from each other.
Interposed between the wings 6 in rear of the point 4 is a slide 7, which has for its function to hold the wings apart and also against accidental outward movement. The said slide 7 is preferably of the specific construction as shown in Fig. 5, though it may be of any other construction, compatible with the purpose of my invention without involving departure from the scope of the same as defined by my appended claim. At
7 are links connecting the wings 6 and slide 7 Fixed upon the standard 2 is a segmental rack 8, and fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length to the standard 2 is an upright lever 9, equipped with a detent 10, properly positioned to seat in the interdental spaces of the rack 8.
Interposed between and connected to the slide 7 and the lower arm of the lever 9 is a link 11, best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and having for its function to adjust the slide 7 incidental to manual movement of the lever 9.
By virtue of the construction of the link 11, and the construction of the slide 7, as above shown in Figs. 3-5, it will be readily understood that when the lever 9 is released from the rack 8, and said lever is rocked upon its fulcrum, longitudinal movement of the upper arm of the lever 9 in one direction will be attended by outward movement of the wings 6, while movement of the upper lever arm in the opposite direction will be accompanied by inward movement of the wings 6. It will also be readily understood that when the lever 9 is adjustably fixed through the medium of its detent 10 to the rack8,the wings 6 will be strongly and adj ustably held in the positions in which the wings are placed. This is due in large measure to the slide-rest 13, Figs. 3 and 4, longitudinally. slotted at 14 for connecting bolt 15 and provided at its forward end with the angularly-disposed and upwardly-reaching arm 16 that is opposed to the rear side of and fixedly connected to the standard 2.
An important advantage of my improvement resides in the fact that the adjusting and fixing of the wings 6 in different positions does not entail the employment of a wrench or any other device extraneous to the plow. From this it follows that when the farmer desires to change the positions of the wings 6 he may quickly and easily do so by manipulation of the lever 9, irrespective of whether the plow is in the field or at the barn.
Another important advantage peculiar to my improvement resides in the simplicity and strength of the interposed slide, the
adjusting and adjustably fixing the slide.-
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
The combination in a plow, of a standard, a plow point fixed to the forward side of and straddling the standard, laterally-movable wings connected in hinged manner to and extending rearwardly from the edges of the point, a segmental rack fixed on the standard, a hand lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the standard and having a detent positioned to engage the rack, a slide, links connected with and interposed between the wings and the slide, a link interposed between the slide and the lower arm of the hand lever, a longitudinally-slotted slide-rest disposed under the slide and having a forward upwardly-reaching arm opposed to the rear side of and fixed with respect to the standard, and a bolt arranged to move the slot of the slide-rest and connecting the same with the slide.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FREDDIE PIRLOT.
