UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. HILLIS, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR ROLLING METAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,465, dated October 22, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HILLIs, of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Rolls, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to the making of a rail, described in my patent of December 20, 1870; and consists in combining a smooth roll with one grooved on its surface longitudinally and at intervals, so that a fence-rail may be formed from a round rod which shall be flat between the posts, but round, or partially so, where it rests in the mortise, thereby enabling the flat portions to form a shoulder on each side of post.
Figure 1 of drawing is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, showing my improvement.
A B 0 represent three rolls, arranged in the same vertical plane, and provided with corresponding grooves a b c, for reducing and shaping rods in the ordinary manner. 01 d d d represent grooves on the end B of roll B, longitudinally parallel to the axis, and formed with sufficient depth to allow rounded portions to be left at regular intervals with the flattened and spread portions of the rail. These grooves d are constructed, as shown in Fig, 2, with their opposite corners beveled in opposite ditions.
The operation is as follows: The rod or bar of metal having been reduced to the determined size by passing it between grooves a b 0, the required flatness of the rail is obtained by passing it between the part B of roll B and the corresponding circular surfaces oi rolls A G. Curved portions are thus left alternately with flat ones, so that shoulders are secured for each side of the post. After these rails are inserted into their supporting-posts every other flat portion is twisted one-fourth of a revolution, so as to cause one-half of them to be alternately in planes at right angles to the other half.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- Jointly the rolls A B, the roll A being cylindrical and the roll B having grooves, constructed as described.
WILLIAM D. HILLIS.
