'Be it known'that I, FRANCIS J. COLE, of
Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in ater-Separators for Locomotive Steam- Pipes,of which improvement the following steam as it enters the steam chest, and after the water hasbeen separated and deposited. My improvement is particularly deslgned to be used in connection with large modern locomotives havingthe outside type of live steam pipe connection, in which live steam supply for the engine cylinders leads downward and out through openings at the sides of the'shell of the smoke box and above the cylinder castings and then connects with the top of the steam chest of the valve chamher. My invention comprises a water separating chamber inserted in the live steam pipe between the smoke box and the top of the steam chest and provided with suitable deflecting surfaces, and communicating with a collecting chamb'erin which the water may accumulate, and from which it may be discharged at certain periods by a suitable drain valve. o

According to the construction shown, the cylinder casting, 4, may be of the usual form including the engine cylinder, 5, and the steam chest, '6, ofthe valve chamber, having an inlet, 15, for thesupply of live steam from the live steam pipe, 7, which leads downward and outthrough an opening in the side of the shell, 8, of the smoke box.

my improved Water separator, having a chamber, 10, provided with an inlet passage, 17, connected to the steam pipe, 7, and an outlet passage connected to the inlet opening, 15, of the steam chest, 6. At the end of the inlet passage, 17, is mounted a suitable deflector, such as the cone, 11, having ribs, 12, connected to the walls of chamber, 10. The outlet passage is formed with a flange, 13, extending above the bottom of the separating chamber and beneath the deflecting cone, whereby as the live steam flows through pipe, 7, and passage, 17, it impinges against the cone, 11, by which it is spread outward into the chamber, 10, and the water contained in the steam is deposited in said chamber around the flange, 13, and flows into the communicating collecting chamber, 14, while the dry steam passes over the flange, 13, and through the outlet passage and opening, 15, into the steam chest, 6.
After the water has been separated out and deposited, the lubricating oil is introduced into thesteam by means of oil pipe, 16, connected preferably with the outlet passage of the separating chamber, at the point that the steam enters the steam chest.
The collecting chamber, 14:, may be located betweenthe live steam pipe and the cylinder casting where it will be out of the way, and has a suiiicient capacity to hold several gallons of water which, at certain periods,'may be discharged through a pipe, 19, and drain valve, 18, which may be of any suitable and preferred form.
It will now be evident that my improvement may be readily applied to the existing locomotives having the modern form of outside live steam pipe connection, with very little change; and that, by its use, water will be prevented from ntering the valve chamher and engine. cylinder, thereby eliminating the danger of breakage of cylinder castings, and the liability of producing destructive shocks to the frames and the moving parts of the engine. 7
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a locomotive, the combination with the engine cylinder, steam chest, and live steam supply pipe, of a water separating chamber located above the steam chest and 1 having an inlet passage connected to the 2. In a locomotive, the combination with the engine cylinder, steam chest, and live steam supply pipe, of water separating chamber located above the steam chest and having an inlet passage connected to the lower end out the live steam pipe and an outlet passage connected to the steam chest, a flange extending above the bottom of the separating chamber around the outlet passage, and a deflector for said inlet passage.
6. In a locon'zotive, the combination with the engine cylinder, steam chest, and live steam supply pipe, of a water separating chamber located above the steam chest and having an inlet passage connected to the lower end of the live steam pipe and an outlet passag'e connected to the steam chest, and a collecting chamber communicating with the separating chamber and located between the live steam pipe and the cylinder casting.
'7. In a locomotive, the combination with a cylinder casting including the engine cylinder and steam chest, a smoke box, and a live steam supply pipe extending downward through an opening in the sideof said smoke box, of a water separating chamber located above the steam chest and having an inlet passage connected to the lower end of the live steam pipe and an outlet passage connected to the top of the steam chest.
