WORK-HOLDING DEVICE.
Application filed May 16, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that 1,.ANTONIN PLAoEK, a subject of Austria, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVork-Holding Devices, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to work holding devices, and more particularly to a device for attachment to the table of a drill-press for holding work to be scraped 0r reamed.
The main object of the invention is to provide a device which willhold, a piece of work such as tubing having a plurality of flat sides, in such a manner that a rotating tool will scrape 01f the burs produced upon the inner corners of the ends sawing the tube in lengths.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of said character, in which adjustment may be made so that the rotating tool will take off the burs at the corners just flush with the sides of the tubing and thus leave perfectly square end corners.
A further object ofthe invention is to pro vide such a device having simple means for quickly clamping the work in place and releasing it. 7
With the above and other objects in view as will be understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, 1 represents a base to the opposite edges of which are fixed a pair of legs 2 and 3 formed integrally with a cross-bar 4 of a rectangular yoke.
The legs 2 and 3 are provided with vertical slots 5 near the cross-bar 4 for receiving a pair of trunnions 6 and 7, which are fixed into the opposite edges of a rectangular plate 8. A pair of upwardly extending sides 9 and 10 are fixed to the other opposite edges or the plate 8, and these sides carry quick acting clamping means for holding the work. Said clamping means consists of a pair of complemental jaws 11 and 12, having horizontally projecting guide pins 13, which are slidably mounted in openings of the sides 9 and 10. The jaws 11 and 12 are actuated by means of a right and left hand threaded screw 14, which operates in rearwardly extending ears 15 and 16 of said jaws, and is rotatably mounted in openings of flanges l7 and 18 forming a part of the sides 9 and 10. A separating collar 19 is fixed to the center or" the screw 14, and the screw is provided with a handle 20 for rotating the same.
For resiliently supporting the plate 8, a suitable coiled spring 21 is arranged between the same and the base 1, and it is thus supported so that it may rock upon its trunnions 6 and or may tilt, in which latter case the trunnions slide in opposite directions in the slots 5. The coiled spring 21 is held in a central position upon the base by means of pins 22. For changing the tension of the coiled spring 21, in order that it may be adjusted proper action upon the plate 8 for resiliently supportingthe work in the best manner, an adjusting screw 23 is employed. Said adjusting screw is threaded in the cross-bar 4, and is provided with a suitable pivot point 24 for engaging the plate 8, which is provided with a central recess for receiving the same. A lock-nut 25 retains the adjusting screw 23 in its set position.
In practice, the base 1 is fastened in any suitable manner to the table of an ordinary drill-press, and a suitable tool such as 26 is fixed in the rotating chuck of the machine.
The tool 26 is made with an oitcenter triangular tapering point 27 having sharp scraping or cutting edges 28 When sawing so as to exert the oil short lengths of tubing from a plural sided tube such as shown in cross section at 29, burs illustrated at 30, are formed upon the inner corners of the ends thereof. It is a slo and tedious process to remove the burs by filing oil the same by hand, but by clamping the tubing 29 between the jaws ill and 12, and feeding the rotating oil-center tool "26 of the drill-press in the usual manner into the end 01? the tubing, the burs are removed quickly. This is accomplished by the sharp edges 28 of the rotating tool 26 scraping along the inner edges of the tubing '29, due to the cutting); end of the tool being'off-center and the sharp edges thereof striking the inner corners 31 oi: the tubing, which is rocked and tilted thus producing a wabbling motion. It is important to have the coiled spring 21 exert the proper tension against the plate 8, to meet the diillerent conditions, and the adjusting screw 25 may be set to force the plate downwardly upon the coiled spring; or permit the plate to move upwardly, thereby varying the tension of the coiled spring.
It will be unr'lerstoml that slight changes may be made in the construction of the holding device, and also in the scraping tool without departing); from the scope of the appended claims.
Hav ing fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a work holding; device, the combination of a base, a pair of sides resiliently supported by the base to permit tilting thereof, and means carried by the sides for holding work, substantially as described.
2. In a work holding device, the combination of a base, a pair of sides resiliently supported from the base to permit tilting thereof, means for changing the resiliency between the sides and the base, and means carried by the sides for holding work, substantially as described.
3. In a work holding device, the combination of a base, a pair of sides resiliently supported by the base to permit a rocking movement thereof and a tilting movement at a right angle to the rocking movement, and means carried by the sides for holding work, substantially as described.
4:. In a work holding device, the combiation of a base, a pair of legs fixed to the base, a pair of sides arranged at a right angle to the legs, means for resiliently supporting the sides from the legs, and means carried by the sides for holding work, substantially as described.
5. In a work holding device, the combination of a base, a pair of legs fixed to the base, the legs being provided with slots, a plate, trunnions supporting the plate in the slots, resilient means supporting the plate, a pair of sides fixed to the plate, and means carried by the sides -for holding work, sub stantially as described.
6. In a work holding device, the combination of a base, a pair of legs fixed to the base, the legs being provided with slots, a plate, trunnions supporting the plate in the slots, a spring arranged between the plate and the base, means for changing the tension of the spring, a pair of sides eX- tending from the plate, and means carried by the sides for holding work, substantially as described.
7. In a work holding device, the combination of a base, a pair 01. sides resiliently supported by the base, a pair of slidab-ly mounted in the sides, and a right and left hand screw threaded in the jaws for op erating the same, substantially as described.
8. In a work holding device, the combination or a base, a pair of legs fixed to the base, the legs being connected by a crossbar, the, legs being; provided with slots, a plate, trunnions supporting the plate in the slots, a spring supporting the plate from the base, an adjusting; screw threaded in the cross-bar and bearing upon the plate for ohangingthe tension of the spring, a pair oisidesfixed to the plate at rightanglee to the trunnions, and clamping means irried by the sides for holding the work, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the class. described, the combination of means for resiliently holding work so that it may tip, and a rotating tool having an off-centerscraping end for acting upon the work, substantially as described.
