SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,544, dated September 5, I899.

Be it known that we, \VORCESTER RJVAR- NER and HENRY M. LUCAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lathe-Tools, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a device which is adapted to serve as the means for securing a tool to a lathe-turret and for holding said tool in proper relation to the work. a
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which will permit the user to readily change the working position of the tool relative to the axis of the work after the tool has been. fixed in the holder and to withdraw the tool from its working position, and thus prevent it from marking the work in running off after it has completed its out.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same, partly in section, when it is attached to a lathe-turret. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the right end of the device as shown in Fig.1, and Fig. 4 is a detached view of the slide C and its adjusting mechanism.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents what may be called the base-block of the device, which is adapted to be secured to the turret and is of suitable shape for sup porting the other parts of the device in proper relation to each other. The two back-rests B B are mounted and movable in suitable grooves in the block A, and they lie on one side of the hole a in the block through which the work passes. They are adjusted toward the axis of this hole by means of the setscrews b b. On the opposite side of this hole a lies the tool-block D. This block is pivoted to the block A, the pivot, as shown, being a cylindrical stud a, secured to the block A. The block D is mounted on this stud,

The tool-block also has an arm 6?, in which is a slot 01 In the top of the base-block A is a groove 0. in which a slide O is fitted, which slide is provided with upwardly-extended lug c. A plate F, which is rigidly secured by screws or other suitable means to the base-block A, lies over this slide and holds it down in said groove. It is provided with an upwardly-extended lugf.
An eccentric sleeve G, having an operating handle 9, passes through the slot (1 which it fits, and is rotatably mounted on slide 0. In the construction shown this sleeve embraces and is adapted to turn upon a stud c, which is secured to said slide. It is obvious that by taking hold of the handle g, and thereby turning the eccentric sleeve, the tool-block may be caused to rock upon its pivot, so as to carry the tool into its working position, as
shown in Fig. 1, or back from its working ever, this stop is a lug cZprojecting forward I from the block D into the path of the handle g.
Means are provided for moving the slide 0 relative to the base block. and for holding it in any desired position, .which means, as shown, consists of a screw E, which has righthand threads on that part which screws through the lugf and left-hand threads on that part which screws through the lug c. This movement of the slide 0 moves the ec-' centric sleeve bodily to right or left, and thereby swings the tool-holder on its pivot, wherefore when the eccentric sleeve is turned on its axis to the position shown in Fig. 1 the tool will be nearer to or farther from the axis of the work, as the case may be, than before the slide was so moved.
Any suitable means may be providedfor connecting the base-block to the turret. The particular construction shown is intended to be secured to a hexagonal hollow turret by means of bolts which pass through holes in the turret and screw into threaded sockets in the base-block.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a base-block, witha tool-block pivoted thereto having a slotted arm, an eccentric sleeve rotatably supported by said base-block and passing through the.
slot in the tool-block arm, and means for turning said eccentric sleeve, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a base-block, a toolblock pivoted thereto having a slotted arm,
' with a slide adjustably secured to said baseblock, and an eccentric sleeve rotatably supported by said slide and passing through the slot in the tool-block arm, and means for turning said sleeve, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a base-block, adjustable back-rests, and a tool-block pivoted to said base-block having a slotted arm, a slide mounted in a groove in said base-block, an
adj ustment-screw engaging with said slide and with a part rigidly connected with the base-block, a stud carried by said slide and passing through the slot-in the tool-block arm, an eccentric sleeve mounted on said stud in said slot, and an operating-arm secured to said eccentric sleeve, substantially as specified. 1
l. The combination of abase-block, a toolblock pivoted thereto having a slotted arm, with a slide adj ustably secured to said baseblock, and an eccentric sleeve rotatablysupported by said slide and passing through the slot in the tool-block arm, and means for turning said sleeve, and a stop for limiting that movement of the tool-block which carries the tool toward its working position, substantially as specified.
