' APPLICATION FILED APR. 1. 19:9. 1,324,228. Patented Dec. 9,1919.
BY E M /W w M ATTORNEYS FFIQE.
PATEN EDWARD Gr. CARR, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE LAKEWOOD ENGINEERING COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A GORIEORATION OF OHIO.
JOINT-TIE.
Application filed April 7, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joint-Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof. 7
This invention relates to joint ties and'the object of the invention is to improve the construction of joint ties in the manner to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings which accompany this specification and form a part hereof, which drawings illustrate an embodiment of this invention, and on which drawings the same reference'characters are used to designate the same parts wherever they may appear in each of the several views, Figure l is a plan view of a piece of track; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a oint member; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a part of the left hand end of the construction shown by Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates joint members which are secured to ties 2 to form joint ties, which for convenience will be designated by the reference numeral 3. Rails 4: are illustrated as secured to other ties 5 in any suitable manner as, for example by rivets 6, to form unitary sections of track 7 with the rails at both ends free. The joint members 1 may most conveniently be formed as unitary members, but a unitary construction is not essential to the use of the invention. The oint members 1, as illustrated by the drawings, are provided at each end with opposing, downwardly converging centering guides 8, 9, 10 and 11. Between the guides are located rail- flange clips 12 and 13 to extend over the flanges of rails and the inside faces 14: and 15 of the rail-flange clip bases are preferably slightly inclined toward the center as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings. Holes 16 are provided for rivets or other Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable fastening means 17 so that the joint members can be securely fastened to the ties 2. The ties can be made of any suitable material or construction, all of those illustrated by the drawings being the well-known metallic, military tie, the flanges on the under sides not being shown.
The joint ties are constructed by securing joint members thereto at distances corresponding with the gage of the track.
The advantages of the invention are obvious. The centering guides automatically center a rail with respect to a joint member or, conversely, a joint member is automatically centered with respect to a rail. When unitary sections of track 7 are used, it is only necessary to drop the end of one rail between the centering guides and the end of the other rail will drop into its proper centered position, thereby effecting a great saving of time as compared with the use of other constructions. N 0 work is required to be done on the rails to fit them to the joint members and, therefore, the construction is cheap. Sections of track can be laid quickly and cheaply in either direction and the sections of track can be readily removed beginning at either end of the track.
What is claimed is:
1. A joint tie provided with downwardly converging centering guides at opposite sides of the tie for each rail position, and rail flange clips between the guides which are located on the same side of rails.
2. A. joint member for joint ties provided at each end with downwardly converging centering guides with rail-flange clips located between the guides.
3. A joint member for joint ties provided at each end with downwardly converging centering guides, rail-flange clips located between the guides, and having the inside faces of the rail-flange clip bases inclined toward the center.
In witness whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
EDWARD G. CARR.
