COMPANY, Inc;
HOLLOW METAL DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed October 24, 1917. Serial No. 198,267,
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, HENRY R. GOGAY, a subject of the Crown of Great Britain, and resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in I-Iollow Metal Doors, of which the following is a Specification.
. In the manufacture of hollow metal doors it has heretofore been impractical to complete the door until the hinge to be used in connection therewith was known, thus pre venting the stocking up of a large supply of doors and also requiring a special set of dies and tools for each particular size and style of hinge.
The object of my invention is to produce a type of hollow metal door which may be completed in large uantities irrespective of the size and type 0% hinge to be used, thus materially reducing the cost of manufacture and also permitting the rapid filling of orders from stock.
These results are accomplished by blanking out a sub-holder to fit a particular hinge wing, providing a backing carried by the sub-holder and extending across its blanked out portion, to which backing the hinge wing may be secured, and blanking out Lhe edge of the hinge stile to fit the sub-holder, means being employed for securing the subholder to the hinge stile.
A practical embodiment of my invention 7 is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 represents a portion of a door in edge elevation with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section,
Fig. 3 is a section taken in the plane of the line IIIIII of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
The edge 1 of the hinge stile 2 of the door is blanked out to fit a sub-holder 3, preferably channel-shaped, which sub-holder is secured in the blanked out portion of the edge of the door by any suitable means, such, for instance, as by means of upper and lower clips 4, 5, spot-welded as indicated by the dotted circles 4*, 5* to the edge of the hinge stile and overlapping the top and bottom of the sub-holder. Screws 6, 7, are used for securing the top and bottom of the s11b-h0lde to the overlapping portions of the clips 4, 5, The sub-holder is blanked out to fit the particular hinge wing 8 to be used in connection with the door. A backing 9 extends across the blanked out portion of the sub-holder and is spaced therefrom for a considerable distance to accommodate hinge wings of various sizes. This backing 9 may be secured to the sub-holder 3 at the top and bottom of the backing as by being spot-welded asindicated by the dotted circles 9* to the said subholder. The hinge wing is secured to' the backing 9 by screws 1 If necessary, shims 11 may be interposed between the hinge wing 8 and the backing to accommodate wings of different thicknesses to bring the face of the wing flush with the edge of the hinge stile and the face of the sub-holder.
l/Vhile I have shown my invention as applied to the attachment of a hinge to a door, it is obvious that the same means may be employed for attaching the hinge to the door frame, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I intend to arena orrren.
cover this application in any hollow metal I structure where a hinge is to be used.
What I claim is:
1. In a hollow metal door arranged to receive hinge wings of various sizes and styles, a sub-holder blanked out to fit a particular hinge wing, a backing carried by the subholder extending across its blanked out por tion, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the sub-holder, and means for securing the hinge wing to the backing.
2. In a hollow metal door arranged to receive hinge wings of various sizes and styles, a sub-holder blanked out to fit a particular hinge wing, a backing carried by the sub holder extending across its blanked out portion, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the subholder, and means for securing the sub-holder to the'stile.
a channel-shaped sub-holder blanked out to fit aparticular hinge Wing, a backing carried by thesub-holder extending across its blanked out portion, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the sub-holder, and means for securing the hinge Wingto the backing.
a 5.; In a hollow metal door arranged to receive hinge Wings of various sizes and styles, a channel-shaped sub-holder blanked out to fit a particular hinge Wing, a backing carried by the sub-holder extending across its blanked out portion, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the sub-holder, and
means for securing the sub-holder to the stile.
6. In a hollow metal door arranged to re ceive hinge Wings of various sizes and styles, a channel-shaped sub-holder blanked out to fit a particular hinge Wing, a backing carried by the sub-holder extending across its blanked out portion, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the sub-holder, means for securing the hinge Wing to the backing, and means for securing the sub-holder to the stile. i
7 In a hollow metal door arranged to receive hinge Wings of various sizes and styles, a sub-holder blanked out to fit a particular hinge Wing, a backing carried by the subholder extending across its blanked out portion and spaced from the sub-holder for a suflicient distance to accommodate hinge Wings of various sizes and styles, a hinge stile having its edge blanked out to fit the sub-holder, clips carried by the edge-of the hinge stile overlapping the top and bottom of the sub-holder and screws engaging the,
sub-holder and clips for securing the sub holder to the stile. p f
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 29th day of September 1917. V
HENRY R'GOGAY.
