BOOK-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed August 21, 1919. Serial No. 318,978.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LYLE C. EISENHART and NVILLIAM A. LEWIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Silver City, in
this character involving a novel structure and arrangement of parts, whereby the device is adjustable to books of different sizes and to suit the convenience of the person.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
The drawings hereto attached illustrate the preferred form of my invention and on reference thereto:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a book rest or support embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
.F 4: is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5is a detail view of a device as seen from below.
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail on the line 66 of Fig. 4. Y r
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device comprises a base, which partakes of the nature of a track, since the parts mounted thereon are movable. The base inportion of the eludes two longitudinal members 1 which are disposed in parallel relation and are inclined to the horizontal in substantially the same manner as the top of a desk which is sloped downwardly from rear to front.
.T he rest proper is mounted upon the base to move longitudinally thereon and comprises a middle section A and end sections B. The end sections B are adjustable to admit of the length of the rest being varied according to the size of the book to be sup ported thereby. The middle section A is provided with front and rear rollers 3 which are adapted to engage the longitudinal mem bers of the base. The end sections B are similarly provided with front and rear rollers t which likewise engage the members 1. The several rollers 3 and 4 are mounted in the slots of the members 1 and are carried by hangers which embrace the respective members 1 and are attached to the respective sections A and B. The middle section A is provided at its longitudinal or top and bottom edges with guides 5which receive opposite'edge portions of the respective end sections 13. Any suit-able fastening means may be provided for securing the sections B in the adjusted position. These fastening means are indicated at 6 and may consist of hand screws or other clamping means. The guides 5 may be provided in any manner and preferably consist of folded edge portions of the section A, the same being pref erably constructed of sheet metal. The sections B are likewise formed of sheet metal and are slidable in the guides 5 to admit of the length of the book rest being varied to adapt the same to different sizes of books to be supported thereon.
The aim rest comprises similar or like parts which are adjustably connected with the book rest so as to be moved laterally. Each part of the arm rest is a duplicate of the other, l ence a detailed description of one will sufiice for a full understanding of both. The arm rest comprises a lower section 7 an end portion 8 and a top section The lower section 7 has its edge portions bent upwardly, thence laterally in an outward direction to engage guides 10 and 10 on the middle section A of the book rest. The guides 10 are at the ends of the section A and are formed by folding edge portions thereof. The guides 10 are formed at the edges of a strip which is secured at a middle point to the section A. The section 7, like the section A has portions cut therefrom to lighten the structure. Suitable means are secure by Letters Patent is ,rest being varied and an arm provided for holding the parts of the arm rest in adjusted position. As shown, springs 11 are attached to the section A and frictionally engage the section 7, as indicated most clearly in Figs. t
portions of the section A and the middle portion of each is deflected downwardly so to engage the section 7 and retain it in adjusted position.
The parts 7, 8 and 9 are hingedly connected and as a result, the top section 9 may be adjusted to any relative plate to adaot the same to the thickness of the book, so that the arm may be on a level with the top page of the book. The provision of the intermediate section 8 provides for the section 9 adapting i self to the thickness of the book,
so as to rest on the top thereof. These sections may be hingedly connected in any manner and as shown adjacent edge portions are rolled and cutaway to form matching knuckles through which pintle rods pass to pivotally connect the sections.
The arm rest is extensible with the hook rest and for this purpose sections 12 are adjustably connected with the top sections 9, so as to be moved in or out to vary the length of the arm rest to suit the length of the book when adapting the device to a particular length. The sections 12 are supported in guides on the sections 9 and which guides may form a part of the sections 9 and constitute folded edge portions thereof.
A device constructed in accordance with the invention is adapted to be readily adjusted to books of different sizes, both as to length and thickness, so that the arm may be supported on a level with the top of the book when the latter is open and the arm rest may be coextensive with the length of the book rest. The structure such as to admit of the device being reduced to compact form to occupy a minimum amount of space when not required for immediate use.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be con sidered the preferred, or approved form of our invention. It is to be understood that we may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination. of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to movable seclength of the rest compristo admit of 1. A book rest, comprising trons adapted to admlt of the ing movably related sections and 7. The i springs 11 are secured at then ends to edge the length of the arm rest being made to conform to the length of thebook rest.
2. A book rest, comprising movable sections to admit of the length of the rest being varied and an arm rest adjustably connected with the book rest and comprising movable sections .to admit of the length of the arm rest being made to conform to the length of the book rest.
3. A book rest, comprising a base including spaced longitudinal members which are slotted throughout their length, a middle section, end sections slid-ably engaging the middle section and independent supporting means for the middle and end sections engaging the slots of the respective longitudinal members of the base.
l. In a book rest, an arm rest, comprising a lower, a top and an end section, the several sections being hingedly connected to admit of the top section adapting itself to the top of the book so that the arn vmay be on a level. therewith.
In combination with a book rest, an arm rest, comprising a lower section having adjustable connection with the book rest, an outer end section hingedly connected with the lower section, andia top hingedly connected with the, end section and adaptedto conform to the level of the top of a book so that the arm may be supported on a level therewith. r
6; In combination with a book rest, an arm rest, comprising a lower section having adjustable connection with the book rest,'an outer end section hingedly connected with the lower section and a top hingedly connected with the end section and adapted to conform to the level of the top of a book so that the arm may be supported on a level therewith and an extensible section adjustably connected with the top section to admit of varying the length of the arm rest. 7
7. In a book rest, a, middle" section, end sections adjustably connected with the middle section and an arm rest coniprising'like parts, each consisting of a lower section ad-- justably connected with the middle section "of the book rest to be moved in and out,
an end section hingedly connected to the lower section, a top section hingedly con nected to the end section and an adjustable section movable relatively to the top section.
In testimony whereof weaflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
