Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed July 22, 1919. Serial No. 312,540.
To all 'whom z' may concern:
Be it known that l, Rncnn GEORGE CRUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Viriginia, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wagon couplers, and has for its object to provide a simple inexpensive easily applied device of the character specified, for connecting draft apparatus, as for instance, a tractor to the tongue of a wagon.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of the mproved coupler, 4 Y
Fig. 2 is a side view looking at one side,
Fig. 3 is a similar view looking at the opposite side,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, and
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3.
, In the present embodiment of the invention, the improved coupler consists of an upper section 1 and a lower section 2, the said sections being formed from sheet metal of suitable weight, and they are curved transversely to t the peripheral surface of thetongue 3 of a wagon or other vehicle.
The lower section 2 has a slot or opening 4 intermediate its end andside edges, for receiving the stop 5 of the tongue against which the neck yoke bears lwhen the tongue is used with draft animals.
At one side each section 1 and 2 has an outwardly extending perforated lug 6, and these lugs are adapted to be engaged by a bolt 7 to connect the sections at the said sides, a nut 8 being threaded onto the bolt above the lug ofthe upper section. The upper section has depending lugs 10 at the edge adjacent to the lug 6, which lap upon the lower section, and assist to strengthen the connection.
At the othervopposite side edges, the sections are connected by the mechanism shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 5. The lowerV section 2 has at the said edge eXtensions 11 which are slotted longitudinally of the tongue, a plurality of slots bein preferably provided at each section, and these extensions are adapted to be engaged by Vtongues 12 on the upper section, the said tongues being passed through the slots as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 and then bent upwardly to prevent disengagement.
Y sections are clamped on the tongue.
It will be noticed that the sections when connected are shapedto fit the tapering end of the tongue, that is, the said sections are tapering toward one end, and at the said end each section has a longitudinal eXtension 13, the said extensions being spaced apart from each other as shown, when the Each of these sections has a perforation or opening 14, and these openings register when the sections are in place on the tongue, and they are adapted to be engaged by mechanism on the tractor. As for instance, a draw bar might be inserted between the lugs and connected thereto by a bolt'passing through the openings 14.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be noticed that the stop 5 is formed of a strap which 75 is secured to the top and bottom of the tongue, and which forms a loop 15 at the front end of the tongue for engagement by breast chains, when such chains are used, this being the usual construction. Preferably openings 14 are made slightly oblong and the opening 4 for the tongue stop is also made somewhat longer than necessary to provide for different lengths of stops.
l. Apparatus for connecting a tractor to ,a wagon tongue and comprising a sectional clasp for the end of the tongue, said clasp consisting of upper and lower sections detachably connected at their adjacent edges and having at their outer ends spaced perforated lugs for connection with the draw bar of the tractor, the lower section having an opening for permitting the passage of the yoke stop on the tongue, said detachable connection between the sections comprising outwardly extending perforated lugs at one edge of the sections, a bolt engaging the openings, slotted extensions at the opposite edge of one of the sections and tongues on the other section for engaging the extensions.
2. Apparatus for connecting a tractor to a wagon tongue and comprising a sectional clasp for the end of the tongue, said clasp consisting of upper and lower sections detachably connected at their adjacent edges and having at their outer ends spaced perforated lugs for connection with the draw bar of the tractor, the lower section having an opening for permitting the passage of the yoke stop on the tongue.
