PAPER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed April 10, 1918. Serial No. 227,667.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waverley, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the follow ing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to paper boxes of that type which are made by folding into box shape a one-piece integral blank, and the objects of the invention are to provide a novel box of this type which will securely hold any contents which may be placed therein, and-also to provide a novel blank from which the box is made.
In order to give an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the draw.- ings a selected embodiment thereof. which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view of the blank from which the box is made;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the box partially folded;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 Fig. 2.
The blank from which the box is made is cut into the shape shown in Fig. 1, and it comprises the section 1 that constitutes the bottom of the box, the section 2 that constitutes the topof the box, and the section 3 which constitutes one end of the box and which connects the sections 1 and 2 along the lines 4 and 5. The bottomsection 1 1s rovided at one end with the end flap 6 which is foldable at right angles to the bott. m 1 along the line 7 and is also provided with the two side flaps 8 on opposite sides which are foldable at right angles to the bottom along the lines 9.
The blank is provided with the two slits 10 at the junction of the sides 8 and the bottom 1 and is also provided with a slit 11 at the junction of the end flap 6 with the bottom 1. v
The t0p'2 of the box is provided on each side with the side flaps 12 Which are con nected to the top and are foldable at right angles thereto along the lines 13, and said top is also provided with the end flap 14; which is connected and foldable at right angles thereto along the line 1'5. Each side flap 12 has formed integral therewith a laterally-extending tab 16 and the end flap 14 has integral therewith a laterallyextending tab 17.
v In order to form the complete box from the above-described blank, the side flaps 8 and the end flap 6 are folded upwardly into position at right angles to the bottom, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end 3 is-also folded up at right angles, thus making a box body. The box body thus formed may then be filled, after which the top 2 is folded down on top of the upturned side and end flaps 8 and 6,, and the side flaps 12 of the top and the end flap 14 of the top are folded down at right angles thereto so as to overlie the side and end flaps 8 and 6 associated with the bottom. As the side flaps 12 are folded against the outside of the side .flaps 8, the tabs 16 are inserted through the slits 10, said tabs extending parallel to the bottom. Since the apertures 10 are at the 'j unction line between the side flaps 8 and the bottom 1, said tabs will lie directly on the bottom. During the folding of the end flap 14 of the top the tab 17 thereof is inserted through the slit 11, thus locking said end fla in place. The three tabs all of which is close against the bottom operate to securely hold the end flap 14 and side flaps 12 of the top in proper position, thus holding thev box closed. Y
A. box of this construction is well adapted for holding candy or a similar article. It can be inexpensively made and is so constructed that it will hold its box shape after the tabs have been inserted through the slits.
I claim:
.1. A box made from a; one-piece blank and comprising a bottom having integral therewith upturned side flaps at two opposite sides and an end flap at one end and having tab-receiving slots formed at the junction of the bottom and the side and end flaps extending therefrom, and a top integrally connected at one end to the other end of the bottom by a section which constitutes one end of the box, said top having side flaps integral therewith on two opposite sides and an end flap integral therewith at the end, the side and end flaps of the top overlying and being co-extensive in area wlth the upturned side and end flaps of the bottom, and tabs integral with the side and end flaps of the top extending directly from the edges thereof and at right angles thereto, said tabs passing through the slots and overlying the bottom.
2. A blank for a box comprising a bottom section having two side flaps integral therewith at opposite sides and an end flap extending from one end thereof, a top section integrally connected at one end to the other end of the bottom by a connecting section and having an end flap extending from the opposite end which is of the same size and shape as the end flap extending from the bottom, sald top section also having two side flaps extending from opposite sides which are of the same shape and size as the side flaps extending from the bot-tomsection, each side flap and the end flap of the top section having integral therewith a laterallyextending tab situated centrally thereof, said blank having tab-receiving slots formed at the junction between the bottom and side and end flaps extending therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE H. DODGE.
