Description

l. L. R. LORQUET.
TERMINAL FOR STORAGE BATTERIES. APPLICATION FILED APR.22. 1919.
1,323,077, Patented Nov: 25, 1919.
o I fay/l 'fi/mjar aaef" a'osnrn 1.. REMI LORQUET, or s'r. MALO, comma, CANADA.
TERMINAL FOR STORAGE BATTERIES.
To all whom it may concern:
residing at St. Malo, Quebec, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Terminals for Storage Batteries; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in terminals forstorage batteries and pertains .more particularly to what is known as the thimble type and the object thereof, is to dispense with screw,thread connections between the terminal and the thimble and the usual cap screws for holding the thimble within the terminal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tight union between the terminal and thimble and one in which the associated elements may be rapidly connected and disconnected.
A still further object of the invention is to provide lubrication for the terminal at its connection with the thimble and to avoid corrosion at this point.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool for quickly withdrawing the thimble from the terminal member.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in' the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited,
ut the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or' modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efiiciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings: Fi ure 1 is a top plan of my improved terminal attached to the battery terminal post and to the cable;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of same with the cable in elevation;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 25, 1919. Application filedApril 22, 1919. Serial no. 291,924.
Fig. 3 isa plan view of the thimble element removed from the terminal;
Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view of same; and,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tool for withdrawing the thimble from the. terminal.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the sev-' eral views- Terminals of the common ty e are interiorly threaded for the reception of the threaded end of their associate thimbles and in my improved device the terminal member illustrated in the drawings is designated by the numeral 2, and is preferably constructed of or cast out of brass, havmg an exterior coating of tin to prevent corrosion of the metal from the acids contained in the batteries. The terminal 2 is formed with a hollow barrel 3 and a semicircular extension 4. The inner end 5 of the barrel 3 is closed and said extension 4 is formed with an opening 6 which latter is disposed at right angle to the barrel opening.
The inner walls of'the barrel 3 are machined smooth and adjacent the closed end 5, a continuous groove 7 is cut in the said walls.
A thimble 8 is adapted for insertion within the hollow barrel 3 of the terminal 2 and said thimble is of cylindrical configuration, and formed with a large interior bore 9 and has a restricted bore 10 communicating therewith.
The greater part of the thimble 8, beginning at one end is longitudinally slotted at 11, such slots communicating with the large interior bore 9, and the opposite end of said thimble is channeled at 12 and the metal between the channel 12, and the end tapers inwardly toward the restricted bore 10 to form the head 13. The opposite or split end of the thimble 8 is formed with an interiorly vdisposed groove 14 and an exteriorly disposed ridge 15 andwhen the thimble is inserted within the barrel 3 of the terminal member 1, the said ridge 15 will seat in the continuous groove 7 thereof. A spring wire 16 seats in the interior groove 14 of the thimble and serves to tension the split portions 17 of the said thimble outwardly to keep the ridge l5 seated within the groove 7 of the terminal'member.
The cable 18 is inserted in the restricted" bore 10 in the head portion 3 of the thimble and forms a tight union therein. The terminal member 1 may be connected to the battery, by positioning the opening 6 of the terminal extension 4 inregister with the terminal post 19 and mounting the said terminal thereon. Then the split portions 17 of the thimble 8 are inserted into the hollow barrel 3 and are tensioned outwardly by spring 16 into engagement with the interior wall of the said barrel and the said ridge 15 is tensioned into the groove 7 of the said terminal member.
A portion of the thimble 8 carrying the head 13, is adapted to extend outwardly from the barrel 3 and for'the purpose of detaching the thimble from the terminal member, I employ a 1:001 20, comprising the arm members 21 pivoted together at 22 and the outer ends of these arm members 21 are enlarged to form the spanner elements 23 and 24, having arc'uate shaped openings 25 and 26.
. The spanner element 23 and its associated opening 25 are larger than the spanner element 24 and its opening 26. When the tool 20 is to be used to withdraw the thimble 8 from the terminal member, the spanner element 23 is positioned on that portion of the thimble contiguous to the end of the barrel 3 and the other or smaller spanner element 24 is positionedin the channel 12. In this position theouter end of the thimble will be positioned within the arcuate openings 25 and 26 of the tool ends 23 and 24. Leverage is then exerted upon the arm members 21 of the tool, which action forces the spanner element 23 outwardly against the end of the barrel 4, while the spanner element 24 in the channel 12, is forced outwardly and carries the thimble thereby.
For the purpose, of lubrication, I insert grease Vaseline, or parafiin within the interior of the barrel and the hollow portions of the terminal barrel and enlarged bore of the thimble, to prevent interior corrosion and provide a smooth slip joint.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
