Application filed May 1, 1920. Serial No. 378,240.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVinLmrr Curr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Connectors, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to cable connectors and in particular to connecting devices for securing adjacent ends of electrical wires or cables.
One object of the invention is toprovide a connector in which wires or cables of any size capable of entering theconnector openings may be. held as securely as if the wires were manufactured to fit the particular size of opening. The invention is also directed to providing a remarkably secure fastening device which will resist considerable pull from either or both of the two wire or cable members secured therein.
One of the features of the invention resides in the fact that the clamping members extend completely across and completely fill the bore of the device at those points opposite the openings in which the clamping members are inserted. Another feature which makes it possible to securely hold any size of cable or wire, regardless of the small dimensions, thereof, is the construction of the interior of the main bore of the connector. This last feature includes a cutting away and the. formation of recesses on either side of the central point of the wall of the bore of the device opposite the opening which receives the alarming member. These recesses permit the right angle shoulders of the clamping member to extend into them and allow the central portion of the clamping member to reach the wall of the bore. Another feature of advantage which resides in the construction provided by the recesses is the fact that when a cable comprising a plurality of strands. or'a cable substantially filling the bore of the connector. isinserted and clamped, the pressure of the clamping member will so distort the cable that portions thereof opposite the recesses will be forced into the recesses and thus securely lock the cable therein and prevent -endwi-se movement of the same.
Details of the device will be understood from the following specification and claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents atop plan view of the in Fig. 3, but with the screw threaded clamping member removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 is the mainbody member of the connecting device, and which is preferably made of substantial metal and which should be formed of ood conducting material in event the*-'- device is to be used in electrical work. 2 represents the main bore of the connector, and which is adapted to receive cables or wires into each end thereof. ,As shown the bore 2 extends completely through the block f l, but it is not necessary that the bore'be carried to the opposite end if the device is to be used in electrical work, since the conductivity of the metalof the connector may be satisfactory. Extending at right angles into the main body 1 are the screw threaded clamping members 3 fitted into the screw threaded receiving openings t. The invention requires that the diameter of the clamping screws 3 shall be at least as great as the bore of the opening 2 and that these screw threaded members 3 shall be capable of extending toithe opposite wall of the bore. This is only possible by the formation of the interior of the bore 2, which is provided with recesses 5 for the reception of the inner end of the clamping members 3. The recesses 5 are preferably formed by continuing the bore of the receiving openings 4 to the opposite side'of the main bore 2 and cutting away the recesses. It is then possible for the extreme inner end of the clamping members 3 to project into the recesses.
This construction makes it possible for a small wire to be held as securely as a large one and without the possibility of slipping from beneath the inner end of the clamping member as is the case wherethis member has an inner end smaller than the bore of the opening in which the wire or cable is inserted. The construction also provides that the clamping member may extend to the opposite wall of the bore and can therefore securely hold any wire regardless of the small size thereof. The recesses 5 enable the Fries represents a cross-section taken on lllll clamping member 3 to force the material of the cable or wire into the recesses and thus to assist in preventing endwise movement.
The construction of this cable connection has proved to be of remarkable advantage in electrical work. The invention includes such changes as may be desirable in the shape of the heads or outer ends of the clamping screws 3 and these may be formed as bolt heads, if desirable. Likewise the inner end of the clamping members 3 may be concave to be of assistance in gripping the metal of the wire or cable to be held.
What I claim is:
1. A cable connector comprising a block member having a main opening extending therethrongh and a plurality of screw threaded openings atrright angles to said main opening, and a screw threaded clam ing member in each of said screw threaded openings having a diameter at least as great as the diameter of said main opening and extending completely to the side wall of said main opening opposite said right angle openings.
2. A cable connector coprising a block member having a main opening extending therethrongh and a plurality oi? screw threaded openings at right angles to said main opening, the wall of said main opening being cut away on either side of the central point opposite said screw threaded openings, and a screw threaded clamping member for each otsaid screwthreaded openings having a diameter at least as great as the diameter 0t said main opening and having a clamping end adapted to eXtend to the opposite wall of said main opening and to have its lateral end portions rest 111 i the openings cut away on either side 01'' the central point opposite said screw threaded openings.
3.' In a cable connector comprising a block member having a main opening extending therethrongh and a plurality of screw threaded openings at right angles to said main opening, a screw threaded clamping member for each of said screw threaded openings and each adapted to extend to the wall of said main opening opposite said screw threaded openings, the wall of said main opening being cut away on either side of the central point opposite said screw threaded openings tor the reception of the end of said screw threaded clamping members.
1-. A cable connector comprising a block member having a main opening extending therethrongh and a plurality of screw threaded openings at right angles to said main opening. the wall of said main opening being cut away on either side of the central point opposite said screw threaded openings, and a screw threaded clamping member tor each of screw threaded openings having a clamping end adapted to engage a member inserted in said main opening and to firmly hold the same and to force portions of the member so inserted laterally into the openings cut away in the wall of said. main opening.
In testimony whereof I atiiX my sig- VVILLIAM E. CAMP nature.
