UNITED. sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
Appucatin mea may 1o, 191s. serial No. 233,712.
T o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. LYON, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseheads, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the :following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchV as will enable others skilled in ,the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and its primary object is the provision of a novel device of this character by means of which a short nipple may be readily and quickly applied to or removed from a fitting located in a Hoor or wall without damaging the nipple orthe threads theliieof and without marring the floor or wa A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the above stated character by means of which a brass or nickel plated nipple may be applied to or removed from a fitting Without injuring the outer surface of the nipple.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the above stated character which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View illustrating the manner in which the wrench may be inserted in one end of a nipple.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the wrench locked in the end of the nipple.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the wrench and the handle adapted for use in connection therewith, the handle being shown applied to the jaws of the wrench, and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 and 2 designate the jaws of the wrench. The jaws are of elongated semicylindrical formation, and are provided on their outer convex sides with a plurality of V-shaped ribs 3. The ribs 3 extend longitudinally of the jaws from a point coincl` dent with the outer ends of the jaws to a point short of the inner ends of the jaws.
Those portions of the jaws which are located beyond the inner ends of the ribs 3 are `formed to provide an angular stud 5 to permit the application of a handle 6 to the jaws. The inner concave sides of the jaws are provided with screw threads 7.
A tapered bolt 8 is arranged between the jaws 1 and 2 and provides means by which the jaws may beexpanded to establish a firm lgripping connection between the aws and the inner side of a nipple. The bolt 8 is provided with screw threads 9 which cooperate with the screw threads 7 on the inner sides of the jaws to cause the bolt 8 to move forwardly or rearwardly with respect to the jaws when it is turned independently of the jaws. When the bolt 8 is moved forwardly with relation to the jaws 1 and 2, the latter are permitted to move inwardly with respect to each other so as to reduce the diameter of the wrench sufficiently to permit it to be readily and quickly inserted in one end of a nipple 10, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the bolt 8 is moved rearwardly with relation to the jaws `1 and 2, the latter are moved outwardly with relation to each other.v resulting in the teeth or ribs 3 of the jaws being forced into the inner wall of the nipple 10 and establishing a firm gripping connection between the jaws and the inner wall of the nipple. To permit the bolt 8 to be moved either forwardly or rearwardly with relation to the jaws l and 2, the rearward end of the bolt is provided with an angular extension 11 adapted to be received in a small angular opening 12 in one end of the handle 6. The other end of the handle 6 is provided with a larger opening 13 to receive the lug 5 of the rearward ends of the jaws 1 and 2.
After the wrench has been inserted in the end of the nipple, and the jaws 1 and 2 expanded to establish a firm gripping con.- nection between the teeth or ribs 3 and the inner side of the nipple, the handle 6 is applied to the lug 5. By imparting a rotary movement to the handle 6, the nipple may be threaded onto or unthreaded from the fitting. -To prevent the mutilation of the threads of the nipple, and to prevent the splitting of the end of the nipple in which the wrench is inserted.I I provide a nut 14, which should be applied to a thread belfOTe imparted to the wrench will thread the nipple in or unthread it from a fitting. It
should also be apparent that the wrench is especially adapted for applying and removing nipples to and from ttings located in a iioor or Wall, and that such fittings may be applied or removed without marring the Wall or floor. The wrench is also adapted for applying and removing nipples to and from exposed fittings, and for applying and removing brass or nickel plated nipples without marring the outer surfaces of such nipples.
f c The use of the nut prevents the mutilation of the threads of a nipple or the splitting of the end of the nipple during the application or removal of the nipple by the Wrench, g
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will be understood that minor changes in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts may be made without depart ing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim aS new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A wrench having gripping jaws, an eX- panding member for the jaws, said jaws and member having interengaging screw threads to maintain the jaws in proper relation within an object in addition to facili tat-ing spreading of the jaws, one end of the aws coperating to form a wrench head, and gripping teeth on the exterior of the jaws terminating at the head so as to form a rest for a wrench in engagement with the head, the screw having a wrench head projecting beyond the first wrench head so that the end of the first wrench head may serve as a rest for a wrench in engagement therewith when the aws approach gripping relation with an obj eet, and a single wrench cooperating with said wrench heads having an opening to receive the first 'wrench head and an opening to receive the second wrench head smaller than the first mentioned opening.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
