To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER F. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityof Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented newanduseful Improvements in Flexible Staybolts, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to flexible stay bolts I for connecting the outside and fire box sheets of a boiler, and particularly to an] improved construction of seat flange or thimble in which the outer end or head of the bolt is pivotally mounted, and mode of connecting said flange or thimble to the outside sheet.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction of flan e or thimble and wall .or outside sheet, w ereby the flange or thimble may be firmly secured within ,a receiving opening in the sheet against any possibility of becoming loosened or disconnected, glving all of the advantages of an integral connection of the thimble or flange with the sheet at less cost while enabling new flanges or thimbles to be applied in case of damage or injury to those-in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a flange or thimble which overcomes the disadvantages of threaded thimbles or sleeves in strengthening instead ofweakening the outside sheet about the bolt hole, and which may be set at any angle to bring the bolt holes in the inside and outside sheets into alinement, thus disposing the bolt so that the pulls resulting, from stresses and; strains will fall u on the bolt and sheet conand 3 the stay bolt. This surface 8 pivotally engages a concaved seat surface 9 within the outer end of a seat flange, sleeve or thimble 1( so as to permit the bolt to have proper pivotal movements to accommodate itself to expansion and contraction of the boiler sheets. The outerend of the said seat flange or thimble is of cylindrical form and is externally threaded, as shown at 11, for engagement with the threaded flange of the usual 'cap or cover 12, between which and the outer edge of the flange or thimble may be interposed an elastic gasket 13.
In accordance with my invention, the wall or sheet 2 is provided with a receiving opening 14.- which flares in an outward direction, being of smallest diameter at its inner end 75 and of maximum diameter at its outer end, and having its wall inclining at substantially an oblique angle in an outward direction. This opening receives the inner end 15 p of the thimble 10 which is bell-mouthed in 8 0 shape or flared to a corresponding degree in/ the opposite direction. In preparing the outside sheet for the reception of the seat thimbles, the openings 14 are first formed and the inner ends of the thimbles fitted in position, the welding composition or filler introduced and the weld made by the use of an oxy-acetylene welding apparatus, thus fusing the metals together so that the union between the sheet and this means all of the advantages of a flang thimble is of a homogeneous character. By reason of the shape of the opposing surfaces of the opening 14 and thimble any possible tendency to displacement of the thimbleis resisted by a union of wedge for-- mation, whereby maximum resistance to deflection, fracture or displacement is secured.
In constructing a locomotive boiler it is not absolutely necessary to stay the outside wrapper sheet, since, owing to its contour, this sheet has suflicient strength in itself, but it is necessary to stay the inside or fire box sheet, and to this end flexible stay bolts are commonly employed which are extended between and connected with the two sheets, and which, owing to the different curvatures of the inside and outside sheets, are arranged in radial series struck from difle'rent centers. Owing to this arrangement, some of the bolts extend at an angle, making it impossible, with the use of threaded sleeves or thimbles, to secure more than one complete thread for the connection of the thimble in the thickest part of the metal of the outside sheet, which is ordinarily not more than onehalfeinch. In renewing a fire box sheet, it also frequently happens that the substitute fire box sheet is not always the exact duplicate of the original, and hence when this new fire 'box sheet is set in position forconnection the sets of cooperating stay bolts are not disposed in proper alinement. In the use of threaded sleeves or thimbles, it is hard to overcome this diiiiculty, and it can not be overcome without some of the bolts being set at an angle, with the result that the pulling strains are transmitted at an angle to the of the bolt. Other advantages of my improved thimble or sleeve is, that it allows a greater degree of flexibility thanother forms of sleeves or thimbles, that it is stronger and more durablethan any other sleeve or thimble because it may be made heavier than ,a threaded thimble, and after being welded into the sheet gives both greater strength and durability to itself as well as to the sheet. Moreover, the thimble maybe bent or set to lie at any acute angle, to dispose the bolt properly for a straight pulling strain along its fixed radial line, without any tendency to cause leakage, as is the case in the use of threaded sleeves.
Further, the application of the thimble by the method is permanent, it not being necessary to renew this thimble unless the outside sheet is removed.

inner end fitted within said opening, a substantially V-shaped recess being thereby formed between the wall of the opening and flared portion of the thimble, a welding filler of wedge formation in cross section occupying said recess and binding the thimble in a substantially homogeneous manner to the boiler sheet, and a stay bolt having pivotal engagement with said thimble.
