Be it known that I, SAMUEL `W. RUFF, a`
Gackle, in the county of Logan, State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Rope-Clamping Device; and I .do hereby declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved rope holding or clamping device.
In selling rope in general stores, where merchandise, hardware, implements and the like are sold, the reel of rope is disposed in basement and the end of the rope is passed up through the Hoor. When certain lengths of rope are sold they are measured oil", and when cut or severed from the main body of the rope, it very often occurs that the end of the rope is allowed to pass d own through the opening in the Hoor, requiring the salesman to leave the customer and go into the basement and repass the end of the rope through the opening in the floor.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device for securely holding or clamping the end of the rope, preventing it from dropping into the basement, and'consequently overcoming the foregoing disadvantages. y
A further object of the invention is to provide a tubular holder for the rope, a spring clamping device engaging through an opening in the wall of the tubular holder to clamp or bind against the rope, in combination with means carried by the tubular holder slidably for releasing the spring clamping device.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling Within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in plan of the improved holder or clamp constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a tubular member or holder, one end of which is aredoutwardly, thereby Vproviding a bead or marginal roll 2; the other end is provided with a circular disk flange 3. The tubular holder or member is designed to engage through a hole or opening 4: of the wall or floor, whereby the circular disk flange 3 may be secured by screws 5 to the wall or floor 6. The end of the rope 7 passes through the tubular holder or member 1, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings. The tubular member or holder has an elongated opening 8, and secured at 9 to the holder is a spring clamping device 10. The end portion of the! spring clamping device 10 normally curves downwardly through the opening or slot 8, whereby the lug V11 and the free end 12 of the clamping device may engage or bite into the rope normally as shown in Fig. 2. A slide bar 13 is mounted in an opening 14 of the circular disk and the arched guide 15, which is carried by the tubular member or holder. This bar 13 has an elongated slot orl opening 16, through which the spring device 10 also engages, thereby additionally guiding the slide bar. The outer end of the slide bar has an upturned hook 17. When it is desired to cut or sever a piece of rope,
and also measure the same, the slide bar 13 is pulled outwardly, and in so actuating said bar the end edge 18 of the slot or opening will cam against the spring device 10, and lift the end portion 12 of the spring device, suiliciently, so that said end and the lug 1l will be disengaged from the rope. The rope is then free to be pulled through the tubular holder and measured olf, and before cutting the rope the slide bar 13 may be pushed in wardly, allowing the end of the Vspring device to engage the rope, and after which the rope may be severed. In this manner the severed end of the rope is prevented from falling into the basement, as in the old way.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a rope clamp, a tubular rope receiving member having in its wall an elongated opening and adapted to be fixed through a stationary support, a spring clamping device normally engaging through the opening and biting against said rope, and a slide bar 1 mounted in guides of thetuhular holder to actuate the springclamping device to lraise 'i the same out of the opening and disengage itV from the rope.

a spring clamping device fixed to the holder and having its free end extending through the opening' and engaging the rope, a slide bar mounted in guides of the tubular holder land provided with an opening at one end through which the spring clamping device engages, whereby as the slide bar is moved .the spring clamping device will be .lifted name to this specification in the presence of 30 two subscribing Witnesses.
