MARLlNE-SPIKE.
$2ECIFIGATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 535,108, dated March 5, 1895. Application filed January 11, 1895. Serial No. 534,561. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HELGESSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Marline-Spikes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in marline spikes in which the strand of rope to be spliced is held in a suitable cylindrical split holder having a beaded end which is designed to telescope within an outer pointed cylinder, after the strand is adjusted in place within the split portions of the said holder.
A further object of the invention resides in means for holding the strand carrying holder within the pointed cylinder while the latter is being forced through the braids of the rope being spliced, and the provision of means for releasing the holder when it is desired to detach the strand from its clamping arms.
To these ends and to such others as the invention maypertain, thesame consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective View of my marline spike with the two parts locked together and strand held to the inner holder. Fig. 2,
is a vertical longitudinal section through the spike strand holder and rope strand.
Fig. 3
is an enlarged detail view of the inner strand E is an outer cylinder which is hollow a portion of its length and has a pointed end e, and is provided with a longitudinal aperture F opening into the bore of the said cylinder, and within this aperture, and pivoted to the walls thereof is a hook lever G having a springfwhich causes the hooked end to rest normally in a locking relation.
For operation, the strand of rope is inserted within the split holder, and the beaded end thereof is telescoped within the outer cylinder. as far as the shoulder H, and the said bead coming in contact with the spring actuated hook becomes locked thereto, and the spike is ready to be thrust through the braids of a rope which is being spliced, the threads of the strand being securely held Within the split cylinder by means of the screw threads, and when it is desired to release the strand from its clamping arms, the bead is allowed to be withdrawn from the outer cylinder by raising the hook engaging end from the same, when the strand and clamp may be readily and quickly withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a marline spike, the combination of the outer hollow pointed cylinder, a cylindrical split strand holder carried therein, and means for locking the two together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A marline spike having in combination, an outer hollow cylinder open at one end and pointed at the other, a spring catch hook mounted in a lateral aperture in the cylinder, and the split holder adapted to hold a strand or rope and to be locked Within the said outer cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a marline spike the combination of the outer hollow cylinder, a spring actuated catch hook mounted in the Walls thereof, the split clamp-holder having internal threads and a beaded head, and a strand carried bere tween the said split ends, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ADOLPH HELGESSON. Witnesses:
J. O. RUTENIO, OEOIL H. BAUER.
