Description

hub 8 of bearing 6.
To all whom t may concern:
A have shanks WRENCH.
Be it known that I, LEWIS N. RosEciiANs, a citizen of the United States, residingv at vAmerican Falls, in the county of Power and State of Idaho, have invented certaink new and useful lmprovernents 1n Wrenches, of
`which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to wrenches removing nutsrwfromv bolts; land it consists 1n the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a wrench constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is also a side view, but shows the wrench turned onequarter around from the position shown in Fig. 1.
A frame 2 is provided and has a push bar or plate 3 at one end which is adapted to be pressed by the body of the operator. A longitudinal bearing A is provided at the other end of the frame, and 5 is a long tubular sleeve which is journaled in the bearing A. The sleeve has a bearing 6 on its Vfree end portion which is arranged crosswise of its axis, and 7 is a beveled toothed wheel the which is journaled in the cross A socket 9 for engaging with the nuts is connected to the hub 8, and this socket preferably has a rectangular shank 10 which is inserted in a similar hole in the wheel hub. Sockets of dierent sizeV are provided to suit different nuts, and they all 10 of the same size so that they can all be slid into engagement with the hole in the wheel hub 8.
The tubular sleeve 5 is revolved in the bearing l so that the socket 9 may be arranged to project from the frame 2 in any desired direction.
A shaft 12 is journaled in the tubular sleeve 5, and has a beveled toothed wheel 14; secured on one end portion of it, which gears into the toothed wheel 7. A similar beveled toothed wheel 15 is secured on the other end portion of the shaft A12, and is arranged in an opening 16 in the frame 2.
A driving shaft 18 is journaled in bearings 19 on the frame, and is arranged crjosswise of the shaft 12. rllwo beveled toothed wheels 20 and 21 are secured on the end portions of a hub or sleeve 24, which is slidable on the driving shaft, but which revolves with it. The driving shaft preferably has a rectangu- Specification' of Letters Patent. Patented NQV, 25,1919,

lar portion 25 which engages with a similar hole in Vthe hub 2li. s l
. The vtwo beveled wheels`20 and 21 are slid alternately into gear l withV the f beveled toothed wheel 15, so that it may be revolved in either direction without changing thedirection of revolution of the driving shaft.
ing shaft. An eccentric or cam V3() is arranged in the frame 29, and is secured on a shaft 31 which is ourn'aled in the guide 28 and arranged crosswise of the driving shaft.
The earn shaft 31 has a handle32 secured` on one end of it, for operating it Vand thereby sliding the two beveled wheels and their hub back and forth on the driving shaft.
lThe driving shaft is provided with any approved means for revolving` it, and 34 is a hand wheel secured on it for that purpose and provided with a handle 35. .ln order to start a nut or' to screw it up tightly, a lever 36 is also preferably provided; This lever has pawls 37 pivcted to it and adapted to engage with a ratchet toothed wheel Ll() secured on the hub ofwheel 7. lli/*hen the pawls are placed out of engagement with the ratchet toothed wheel, the driving shaft can bel revolved rapidly by the hand wheel.
A wrench constructed according to this invention can be used on nuts in various parts of machinery which are not freely accessible to. wrenches as ordinarily constructed.
What l claim is:
1. ln a wrench, a frame havinga longitudinal bearing, a tubular sleeve journaled in the said bearing, a revoluble nut socket carried by the said sleeve, a shaft journaled in the said sleeve, means for connecting the said shaft with the Vnut socket, a driving shaft journaler. in the frame and arranged crosswise of the said shaft, and driving devices connecting the two saidshafts. i
2. In a wrenclna frame having a longitudinal bearing, a tubular sleeve journaled in the said bearing, a revoluble nut socket carried by the said sleeve, a shaft journaled in the said sleeve, means for connecting the said shaft with the nut socket, a driving shaftjournaled in the frame and arranged crosswise of the said shaft, and reversible `slidable in the guide 28 parallel to the driv- '.f driving'mechani'sm' providedv vvithilbeveled v'toothed Wheels vand operatively connecting the tivo Said shafts.' .v Y, l 3. In a Wrench, a supporting frame havated the` said WheeL-a shaftjou'rnaled in theVV tubular Sleeve, :t beveledv toothedu VWheel i secured on the said shaft 'and gearing'into I the said Wheel, etl driving shaft j|ournaled `1n Ythe 'said Vframe and arranged crosSWise of the Said shzft, `uid reversible drivingmecha-nism f provided With beveled toothed Y ivhl'eelsend operatively connecting the tvvo vSaid shafts, f v
4. Inra wrench, a supporting frame hav- Y n ing a longitudinal bearing, a tubular-:sleeve journaled in the Said bearing andv having e.
bearingerranged crossvvise' of its :misV at Iits freeiend, beveled toothed Wheel jour-V `nfmled in the last said bearing, zt'nut socket.
