.To all wim/u m04/ concern Be it known that l, CONSTANT L. Bravos, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city7 New Yer County7 hl. Y., have invented a new and useful li/Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches of the so-called socket type, the object being to provide a compact and reliable construction which may be used in places which are ordinarily very inaccessible and which can also be operated by means of a lever handle in the usual way or by means of gearing.

5 represents an annular housing which has an integral tubular handle 6 projecting laterally from one side thereof. 7 is a socket member arranged to be rotatably supported within the housing. 8 is a beveled iiange at one end of the housing which constitutes an annular seat for the socket member 7. The adjacent side of the socket member 7 is flanged as at i) and beveled to seat properly on the flange 8. The opposite side of the flange 9 is provided with bevel teeth 12. 11 is a ring which is screw threaded into the opposite end of the housing to hold the socket member in place, the said. ring being` preferably provided with a left hand thread and with recesses to receive a spanner wrench whereby it may be easily applied and removed. 14 is a shaft which is arranged to be passed freely through the tubular handle 6. 13 are bevel teeth fixed on the inner end of said shaft arranged to mesh with the teeth 12 of the socket 7 whereby when the shaft 14 is turned the socket 7 will be turned within the housing 5. To hold the shaft in position. so that the thrust of the bevel gears will not force it away from the socket, I provide a collar 16 which screws on to the outer end of the handle 6 and has a shoulder' which overstands a shoulder 15 on the shaft 14. 17 is a cap which may be provided at the outer end of the shaft 14, and 18 is a bar which slides loosely through a transverse passage in the outer end of the sh aft by which bar suiiicient leverage is provided to permit the socket to be turned against substantial resistance. It will be ap-` by means of the handle 6 or by holding the handle 6 still and turning the shaft 14. Sockets having passages of different sizes and shapes may be provided t0 fit nuts of different sizes and shapes. To substitute one socket for another the user simply removes the ring 1l, unscrews the collar 16 and retracts the shaft 14'sufliciently to cause the gear 18 to become free of the gear 12 whereupon that particular socket may be removed and another one inserted. In the preferred form the shaft 14 is of a size to substantially fill the passage through the hollow handle 6 so that no separate bearing support is necessary. This also permits the gear 13 to be made of adequate size while still being of no greater diameter1 than the bore of the handle 6.
What l claim is:
1. A socket wrench comprising a ringlike housing having a tubular handle projecting laterally therefrom, a `flange at one y end of said housing forming a socket seat7 a `socket having a flange one side of which is supported on" said seat the opposite side of said ange being toothed to form a gear, a removable keeper ring at the other end of said housing to hold said socket on said seat1 a shaft having a gear at one end to coact i with the gear of said socket, said shaft and gear being insertible and removable through said tubular handle. means for holding said shaft in position to hold said gears in mesh, and means for turning said shaft within said handle to rotate said socket in said housing.

In a socket wrench7 an annular housing having an integral tubular handle projecting laterally from one side thereof, a socket mounted to rotate in said annular housing and means for removably holding the same therein. a beveled gear atthe outer side of said socket7 a shaft having a beveled gear at one end, said shaft and gear being insertible and removabley through said tubular housing, with means for holding said shaft in position to cause said beveled gears to mesh and to hold the same in mesh. said shaft'being rota-table within said handle whereby said socket may be rotated within said housing.
