Description

M. .l. KAVEY.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
MARTIN J. KAVEY, 0F PI'J.'JISFIIELD, IJIASSACI-IUSETTS.
COAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTI J. KAVEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coats, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to new and useful improvements in coats.
To those skilled in the art it is well known that the coat collar is formed of a separate piece of goods from the coat lapel, collar and lapel being joined at the notch. Adjoining the coat collar and lapel a double thickness of cloth is formed and necessarily the weave of the goods in the lapel and collar are not in alinement. This causes a tendency for the goods to pucker.
It is therefore the primary object of my invention to provide an integrally formed coat collar and lapel. By the provision of an integrally formed lapel and collar I practically eliminate puckering, cheapen the manufacture of the coat, and better the appearance of the coat owing to the fact that the weave of the collar and lapel will neces sarily be the same, a variation of these weaves being particularly noticeable in striped goods.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved collar and lapel will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation view of a coat embodying the improvements of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the piece of goods shaped to form the integral collar and lapel of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters'of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the body of a coat of the usual construction having the sides 2 and 3 and provided with the usual sleeve 4. My invention essentially concerns the collar and lapel per 86. Therefore, the type of coat to which the improvement is applied does not control the merits of the invention. 7
Referring specifically to Fig. 2, wherein my improvement is best shown, the back of Application filed Aprn 25, 1916. serau No. 93,448.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV, 25, 1919.
the coat has beendesignated 5-and theportion shown is the inner liningo'f the coat. My integral collar and lapel are formed from a substantially arcuate piece of goods designated in its entirety 6 and having the inner marginal edge thereof fit as at 7 to the lining 5 similar to the coat structure generally employed. The other marginal edge of the strip of goods 6 is formed to provide three sections namely, the collar section 8, lapel section 9 and 10, usual notches 11 forming the juncture point between the lapel section and collar section. To permit of smooth connection of the collar section 8 to the body portion of the coat, the intermediate portion thereof is notched as at 8 and obviously allows the slight folding or turning of the collar upon itself to make the necessary curvature for perfect fitting of the same to the coat body portion. The outer goods of the coat back may be sewed in any way to the strip 6 the showing of the same being omitted from the drawing.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the usual seam which extends from the notch 11 to the inner marginal edge of the collar and lapel section is unnecessary in my improved integrally formed collar and lapel.
After the strip 6 has been sewed in place the same is folded along the dotted line 12 and the coat collar and lapel present the usual appearance with the exception of the seam hereinbefore mentioned. It will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that the provision of my improved coat collar and lapel not only improves the appearance of the coat when made but also lessens the amount of work necessary for building up the coat structure. It will also be ap parent that puckering is practically en; tirely eliminated which is one of the chief objections brought against the two piece col lar and lapel. Of course, it will be understood that the lapel section 9 extends down to the lower end of the coat 1 to form the usual reinforcing backing designated 14 in Fig. 1.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that I may make such changes in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as described;
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to s e cure by Letters Patent, is 7 In combination with 'a Coat, a strip of material out to form integral collar lapel;
sections, the intermediate portion of the collar io h ving its inner side notched whereby to permit the turning of the coli P9117 itself to insure proper fitting of the same to the adjacent portion of the coat previous to the Joining of the same thereto by. stitching, the ends of the lapel sections 15 of'the coat and joined thereto by stitching.
testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
