of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukeeand State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dupli- .cating Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention refers broadlyto new and useful improvements in systems for simultaneously recording written or printed matter on a plurality of sheets of paper or the like, and more specifically to duplicating devices for use. in such recording systems.
Modern business conditions are such that any labor and time saving devices are always welcome and many business houses have adopted What is commonly known as the window envelop together with bill heads and the like which, when properly folded display the addressees name and place of business through the opening in said envelop.
Such window envelops are comparatively therefore I have devised an arrangement whereby bill heads and the like and the envelop may be simultaneously addressed. The principal object of the invention relates to a device for carrying out this duplication.
I have also invented an arrangement whereby similar duplicating devices may be used in recording systems in which an original and several duplicate copies are simultaneously made, said copies each having a less amount of writtenmatter thereon than the original.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a combined envelop and bill head such as is illustrated in my United States patent application Serial No. 144912, and showing my improved duplicating device in operative position.
Fig, 2 is a plan view of one portion of the duplicating device.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the complete device.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 illustrates the same members as appear in Fig. 1, portions being broken away to more clearly show the relation of the same.

The duplicating device which forms the principal part of my invention is of very simple construction, it consisting of a sheet I l of paper or the like 1 of any required thickness, the same being preferably of rectangu lar shape as shown in Fig. 2 and adapted to be bent transversely as at :2, the bend being midway the ends of the sheet to procure front and rear portions 3 and 4 respectively;

his sheet forms in effect a container when folded and carries strips of carbon or other form of transfer material 6, one being used for each of the registering openings when the latter are relatively far apart. But
when-said openings are close together as in the device shown in Fig. 3 a'single piece of carbon or transfer material 6 is used. The strip or strips of transfer material is secured by pasting one of its faces to the inner surface of the front-portion 3 of the sheet 1 in such a manner that it covers the opening therein. After the transfer material 6 has been secured to the sheet 1 the latter is bent as above mentioned and paste is applied along its longitudinal edges as at 7 so that when the folding is complete the portions of the sheet to which the paste is applied will adhere to each other. This provides a pocket closed at one side by the bend 2, open at its opposite side and secured together by the paste at the other two sides.
This manner of constructing a duplicating device permits the same to be made with a minimum effort and a small amount of have active faces, generally only one of such sides is pasted to one of the portions 3 or l of the sheet 1. This arrangement is also of course obvious that at'times itmay be necessary to secure both sides of the transfer strip to the portions of the sheets 1 between which it is placed. A
In the uses to which this invention is placed, as will be hereinafter particularly pointed-out, it is necessary to have a restricted area of carbon, "such area being necessarily determined bythe opening in the rear portion of the carrying sheet. Because of this it is impractical to omit the portion t of the sheet 1. Furthermore, it is essential that the carbon be as thin as possible, especially where the device is used for recording several duplicates; this is the reason a'strip of carbonof the exact area necessary is not pasted upon a carrying sheet having no' opening, and also the reason why it is not advisable to print the carbon upon the back of the carrying sheet as is sometimes done.
Paste between the carrying sheet and the strip of carbon will also interfere with proper reproduction.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two uses to which my invention may be put, but it will be understood that the same is not limited thereto as it will be very efiicient wherever a carbon of restrlcted area is needed. One of its uses is shown in Figs. 1 and 5 wherein it is used with one of my combination envelops and message sheet such as is shown in :my patent application hereinbefore referred to, the envelop being designated by the numeral 8 and the message sheet by the reference character 9. This message .sheet is attached directly to the material forming the envelop, and when properly folded the heading will be directly over the usual address portion of the envelop. Now by inserting one of my duplieating devices between the envelop sheet and the message sheet 8 and 9 respectively the user may simultaneously address both the envelop and the message sheet. Inthe use of the device with this combined envelop andmessage sheet the restricted. area of carbon is so placed with respect to the edge of the duplicating device that the address on the envelop will always be in proper position. If an ordinary sheet of carbon paper or one having an unrestricted area or transfer surface was placed between the envelop sheet and message sheet, careless persons in addressing the message sheet would probably improperly position the address so that it would appear on the wrong part of the envelop sheet. Furthermore, a carbon of restricted area prevents any matter from being transferred except that which is absolutely essential, for instance the date and other matter on the message sheet with and kept by the purchasing agent or other ofiicial, the form shown in Fig. 7 which is a duplicate of'that shown in Fig. 6 with the exception that the value of the articles listed is omitted, is sent to another oflicial of the company, while the other form goes to a third department of the concern. This last form'is similar to the other two with the exception that theinumber of articles aswell as their value is omitted. In preparing the duplicate forms in this system duplicating devices constructed in accordance with my invention are used, these devices being shown in Figs. 8 and 10. It will be noted that the device illustrated in Fig. 10 has a lower restricted area' of carbon which is smaller than the'similar area on the device in Fig. 8.
c The device in Fig. 10 is placed on the form shown in Fig. 9, and on this device is placed the form of Fig.7, then the device shown in Fig. 8 is placed thereon, after which the original form shown in 'Fig. 6 is laid in place. Now when writing is placed on the original the same will be recorded on the duplicates with certain exceptions which have been hereinbefore noted.
From these two examples of the use of my invention it will be seen that a very important labor saving device has been produced and one which can be manufactured very inexpensively.
I claim 1. A duplicating device comprising a sheet of material having a pair of spaced like openings, said sheet being folded upon itself from one edge to the remote opposite edge and midway between the openings to register the latter, and a piece of transfer material disposed between the folded portions of the sheet and secured to one of said portions immediately surrounding the opening therein, said portions being secured together only along the aforementioned edges extending transversely of said fold, the other contactin surfaces of the portions being unsecure 2. A duplicating device comprising a sheet of material having a pair of spaced like openings, said sheet being folded longitudinally upon itself from one transverse edge to the other and midway between the openings to register the latter, and a piece of transfer material disposed between the folded portions of the sheet and secured to one of said portions immediately surrounding said opening therein, the transverse edges of said portions being secured together, the longitudinal edges of the sheet and the other contacting surfaces thereof being unsecured.
3. A. duplicating device comprising a sheet of material folded upon itself midway two of its edges to form two portions of like size, each of said portions having a plurality of openings, those in one portion being similar to those in the other and similarly spaced from the fold to register the same upon the folding of the sheet, and a piece of transfer material disposed between the folded portions of the sheet, said piece of transfer material being of suflicient size to cover all the said openings inone of the portions and secured to the latter imme- *diately surrounding said openings, the parts I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee. 30
