To all whom it may/concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD F. Roman,
a citizen 1 ofvthe United States, residing at -'Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crank-Case and Fly-VVheel Structures, of which the follow ing is a full, clear,' and exact description, taken in connection with the drawings annexed"liereunto",-suchas will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My present invention relates in general to gas engines, and has reference more espe; i c1ally to. an improved crank case and fly wheel construction for use in connection with gas enginesof theicrank case 'compresprove the construction and increase the efii= ciency and utility of structures of this type; to provide an improved fly-wheel structure consisting of a pair of wheel elements con structed and arrangedinthe crank casing so as to provide full bearing areas throughout and" for adequate lubrication of the same, and to provide a construction of the character stated that is easily manufactured and readily assembled in a minimum of space. The invention further anticipates the provision of novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which Will be first fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a central vertical longitudinal section of an engine to which my invention is shown applied; and

- It will be noticed by refer' ence to-Fig. 1 that, in order to economize-space and to increase bearing surface area,- {the verticalwall-of thepcrank case is-dished inwardly at 13, and provided with a bearing 14, suit-- ably bushed at 15, to receive the-crank shaft element 16 which is "formed with the fly wheel member-17 and has a tapered projectiing end 10 designed to' receive' the drivingpulley 19; the latter bei'ng' held in place by a key and nut 20.

The numeral 28 indicates e piston rod which has a bearing 29, suit ly hushed at 30, to receive the lug 22 which acts as the crank pin, the piston rod haging a second bearing 31 suitably bushed to receive the piston pin 33 .carried in tlie bearings 84 of the piston B.
Formed with the cap 3 and bearing 25 is a gear train housing D con'gposed of three gear pockets 358637, in {which the elements 3839-4O of the gear'jtrain are located, the gear 38 being keyed to the end of the shaft section 24, while the gear 40 is secured on the shaft 41 of the magneto 42, which may be mounted on the bracket shelf 43.
' The pockets of the gear train housing D are-in turn closed by a cap plate 44, the gear 39 being journaled on a stub shaft 45 carried by the cap 44. In order to provide an adequate and effective system of lubrication for the hearings in the crank case C, each of the shaft sections 16 and 24 are axially and then laterally bored to provide the lubricant carrying passages 16 and 24 respectively, for the bearings 15 and 26;

It will be understood that in operation, the lubricant is fed to the engine with the fuel, in accordance with present practice,- and that centrifugal force is relied upon to carry the lubricant via the passages l6 24=e21* to the bearings above enumerated.
What I claim-is:-

In a motorcycle engine of the two-cycle crank compression case type, of an open sided crank case and a fiat detachable side cover plate closing the open side of the case and each provided with a hub,'a centrally disposed piston rod, a two-part fly wheel having its halves positioned within the casing and spaced slightly apart to per init the rod to Work therebetween, bushings for said hubs,- the halves having shaft ortions journal'ed respectively in the bushings of said casing, and said plate, thatpart of the fly-wheel journaled in the casing bushing being integrally formed with a stem projecting toward said plateand the other half provlded with a sleeve having the same length as that of the stem and constructed to receive and surround said stem, a bush ing on said stem, the eye of-the piston rod having a bearing on said stein bushing, a set screw inserti ble through said open side and engaging said stem and its sleeve, a horizontally and laterally directed lubricatin'g duct in each of shaft portions leading to i the bushings of said hubs, and a lubricating duct through said stem provided with a branch communicating laterally with the bushing of the sleeve, substantially as described.
