JOHN E. WHITTLESEY AND J. WILLIAM G. PETERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOM FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,226, dated October 15, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN E. WHITTLE- mm and J. WM. 0. PETERS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottom Frames, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which 7 Figure 1 represents a vertical central longitudinal section through a bed-bottom frame provided with our improvements, and Fig. 2 a vertical section in the plane of the line 00 on.
Our invention relates to that class of bedbot-tom frames in which the end bars are supported by the side rails; and it consists in bracing the end bars in the manner hereinafter described so as to render them more firm without increasing the bulk of either the end bars or the side rails for that purpose.
In the drawing, A represents one of the side rails, and B one of the end bars of the frame. The end bars are supported by the side rails, and G is a plate, which has heretofore been employed in the manner shown, one of its pur poses being to retain the end bars firmly in their position. But it will be observed that however firm the attachment of the end bars to the side rails may be, the former, when supporting the mattress or bedding, will bend under the weight of persons reclining in the bed, if the frame is made of slender parts and of wood, unless the end bars are either supported otherwise than by the rails or braced in a suitable manner. D is a brace applied to the side rails, and supporting the end bars at points between the rails; these braces may also be attached to the end bars so as to retain the latter in their position, and they may either extend along the entire part of the bars included between the rails, or be brought in contact with the bars so as to support them at one or more points along such part.
We deem it preferable to make these braces of malleable iron.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, side rails A, end rails B, plates. C, and supporting-braces D, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN E. WHITTLESEY,
J. WM. 0. PETERS.
