Be it known that I, ALEXANDER IIoLUB, a citizen of Hungary, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. J
This invention relates to wrenches, and the same has .for its principal object the provision of a simple and eiicient wrench, embodying features of construction, which permit it to be adjusted instantly to fit nuts of any ordinary dimension, and which include means whereby, when fitted toa nut, it can be locked unyieldingly in the fitted position'. Y
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, more particularly set forth in the annexed claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved wrench.

Fig. 4 shows a cross-section, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. j v l Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a stem, made preferably of rectangular-shape in cross-section, and with an lintegral head or jaw 6. Cut transversely in one side of the stem, a short distance back of the head as shown, is a toothed region 7, the teeth having pitch or inclination toward thehead, and being cut so that their points lie iush with the surface plane of the stem. In Fig. 4, it will rbe clearly seen that the teeth 7 do ynot traverse the stein from edge to edge, but are cut intermediate its width, so as to permit the provision at the extremities of the teeth, along the opposite edges of the stem, of longitudinal recesses 8, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Through the thickness ofthe stem, midway its width, is provided an elongated slot 9, whose defining walls are flat and parallel, it being noted that this slot at the rear end merges into a circular eye 10.
Slidably mounted on the stem is a sleeve 11 having an integral head or jaw 12, representing a counterpart of the head or aw 6. The sleeve 11, on the side adjacent the toothed region 7, is provided with a square openingl, within which is loosely tted a square plate 14, having teeth 15 adapted to cooperate with the'teeth 7, and having, also at the extremities of its teeth, recesses 16 confronting and paralleling the stem recesses S. Seated longitudinally in the recesses 8 and 16 are bowed springs v17, arranged as best shown in Fig. 3, with their bowed portions resting in the. plate recesses, and with their extremities resting in the stem recesses and capable of sliding therein under flexure. The springs 17 tend normally to hold the plate spaced from the stem so that the teeth of the former are held out of engagement with the teeth of the latter.
Traversing the stem slot 9 and snugly f fitting the fiat defining walls thereof,` is the square shank 18 of a screw, the head 19 of which is countersunk in the plate 14 as shown. The shank 18 merges into a threaded end 20, which projects through a circular opening 21 provided in the sleeve 11. The walls of the opening 21 rise exteriorly of the sleeve to produce confronting projections or cam- like portions 22 and 23 which are beveled in opposite directions as illustrated in Fig. 2. Loosely fitting in the circular opening 21 and screw-threaded upon the end 20 of the screw is the integral circular head 24 of a locking lever 25, which beyond the said circular head, has an integral extension 26. such that when the lever is advanced upon the cam portions, the plate teeth will be drawn intb the stem teeth, as illustrated in Fig. 2; and, conversely, when the lever is moved into a position to lie between the cam portions, the springs 17 will be permitted to act, causing the plate teeth to be disengaged from the stein teeth, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
As the wrench is intended to be fitted to nuts of any ordinary dimensions, whatever their specific size, it is necessary, in view of the provision of the coperating teeth, to grind off or taper the nut engaging faces 27 of the jaws, as shown in Fig. 1, the degree of grinding or tapering being, of course, proportionate to the pitch of the cooperating teeth. l
To indicate when the teeth are securely in mesh so as to prevent any relative yield- This arrangement is Y ing of the sleeve in respect to the stem, I provide the sleeve with a projecting pin 28, against which the lever may abut. Vhen for any purpose, for instance, for the adjustment or replacement of any of the parts, it is desired to rotate the screw, this may be accomplished by moving the sleeve against the stop 29, in which position the screw is brought centrally or' the eye 10 where it may be rotated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that by turning the lever into position between the cam portions, the sleeve may be adjusted on the stem in the position necessary to iit the jaws to the object to be turned; whereupon the lever is moved upon the cam portions and against its post, locking the sleeve in its adjusted position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a tool of the character described, a stem having an integral jawand provided with a toothed region on one side and an elongated slot in itscenter, a sleeve having an integral counterjaw slidable upon the stem and provided with openings having communication with said slot, one of said openings being squareand coming adjacent the toothed region and the other opening being circular in form, a square plate loosely fitting within the square opening and'provided with teeth adapted to mesh with the ste-1n teeth, means acting on said plate and tending normally to hold the plate spaced from the stem with the cooperating teeth out of engagement, a screw conntersunk in said plate and having-antiturning movement in said slot and having a threaded portion projecting through said circular opening, and means seated in said circular opening and threaded upon the screw whereby manually to impart longitudinal movement to the screw and to effeet the engagement or disengagement of the plate teeth with the stem teeth.
2. In a tool or' the character described, a stem having an integral jaw and provided with a toothed region on one side and an elongated siot in its center, a sleeve having an integral counterjaw slidable upon the stem and provided with openings having communication with said slot, one of said openings being square and coming adjacent the toothed region and the other opening beine' circular in form, a square plate loosely fitting within the square opening and provided with teeth adapted to mesh with the stem teeth, means acting on said plate and tending normally to hold the same spaced from the stem with the coperL ting teeth out of engagement, a screw countersunk in said plate and having anti-turning movement in said slot and having a threaded portion projecting through said circular opening, a lever having a portion seated in said circular opening and threaded on said screw whereby manually to impart longitudinalmovement to said screw for causing the engagement or disengagement of the plate teeth with the stem teeth, and beveled object-engaging surfaces on one or both of said jaws to compensate for the pitch of the cooperating screws, when the jaws are fitted to an objectto be turned.
3. In a tool of the character described, a stem having an integral jaw and provided with a toothed region on one side and an elongated slot in its center, a sleeve having an integral counterj aw slidable upon the stemy and provided with openings having communication with said slot, one of said openings being square and coming adjacent the toothed region .and the other opening being circular inform, a square plate loosely fitting within the square opening and provided with teeth adapted to mesh with the stem teeth, resilient means acting on said plate and tending normally to hold the same spaced from the stem with the cooperating teeth out of engagement, a screw countersunk in said plate and having antiturning movement in said slot and having a threaded portion projecting through said circular opening, a lever having a portion seated in said circular opening and threaded onsaid screw whereby manually to impart longitudinal movement to said screw for causing the engagement or disengagement or' the plate teeth with the stem teeth, a stop against which said lever may abut to indicate when the teeth are in engagement, and a stop for limiting the movement of the sleeve on the stem.
