Description

N. S. WALKER.
Improvement in Bale-Ties.
Patented Oct. 25,1872,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
NORMAN STEWART WALKER, OF LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND..
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,223, dated October 15, 1872.
N ature and Objects of the Invention.
A bale-tie or buckle constructed in accordance with my invention is formed of one piece of metal, and has the following novel features: First, a closed slot formed alongside or parallel to the tongue to receive one looped.
end of the band to be secured; second, afreeended tongue, of a length a little more than the full width'of the band, to receive the other looped end of the band to be secured; third, a shoulder or detent on such tongue for holding the band thereon; and fourth, such tongue being set out of the plane of the frame or body, whichlatter extends continuously quite around the tongue, or a part of such body being set out of the plane of the tongue so as to leave the tongue free. In the latter case the tongue may be in the same plane as the main part of the continuous body, but a portion adjacent should be raised or sunk to allow the band 1 to be easily attached.
Description of the Drawing.
Figure 1 is a face view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my bale tie or buckel, with a raised continuous bar and independent closed slot. The ends of the band are shown. Fig.- 3 is a face view, and Fig. 4 a side elevation, of my bale tie or buckle, with a depressed freeended tongue and contiguous closed slot. The ends of the band are shown.
In Figs. 1 and 2, A is the tie or buckle, with closed slot at for one end of the band 1. b is the free-ended tongue, here formed in the same plane as the body of A. Adetent, b,is formed on the tongue I) to keep the band in place. 0 is the continuous bar which forms a part of the main body A. This is raised, as shown, to allow the tongue b, with the detent b, to be easily reached, and the other end of the band 1 secured.
In Figs. 3 and 4, A is the tie or buckle with the closed slot a formed alongside a depressed tongue, I) b.
It will be understood that the modification shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may also have the closed slot alongside the tongue.
It will be obvious that bale ties or buckles embodying my invention can be formed by stamping from wrought-iron, steel, brass, or other metal, and that they can also be produced by casting and annealing or otherwise.
Having now described the nature of my said invention, and particularized the same in such manner that others will be enabled to carry my improvements into effect, I claim as my invention- The Within-described bale-tie formed of one piece of metal, having a continuous frame or body extending quite around the tongue, the free-ended tongue I), with a detent, b, to receive one end of the band, and the closed slot a to receive the other end, all arranged as and for the purposes herein set forth.
NORMAN STEWART WALKER.
