Description

s. GIBSON.
WIRE FENCE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 21. 19I8.

SAMUEL crnson, or woonaow, NORTH canomn'n.
WIRE-FENCE CLAMP Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application filed J y $7, 1918. Serial N0. 247,043.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that l, SAMUEL Gnsson, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Wood row, in the county of lilaywood and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful l/Vire-Fence Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention: relates to a clamp for l1olding woven wire fencing while being stretched, one of its objects being to provide a clamp which can be placed readily in engagement with the fabric and, when once applied thereto, will not permit it to slip relative to the clamp.
A further object is to provide a clamp having separate means for binding it upon the fabric or fencing, said means being fastened automatically.
Another object is to provide a clamp which is simple and durable in construction and can be handled readily by one person.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elev ation and partly in section of the clamp.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section.
Fig. 3 is a section through the clamp and showing the holding tongs connected thereto.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a strip having parallel flanges extending longitudinally along one face thereof and formed in the strip at desired intervals and opening between the flanges 2 are apertures 3. The face of the strip 1 opposite that from which the flanges 2 extend is formed with shallow, angular depressions 4: extending longitudinally of the strip.
Secured in the flanges 2 at intervals equal to the distances between the apertures 3 are pins 5 and on each of these pins is journaled an eccentric 6 having a lever 7 extending therefrom. A ring 8 is mounted on each eccentric and extending from each ring is a hook 9 which projects through the adjacent aperture 3. A notch 10 is formed in each levericlose to its ring and pivotally connected to one of the flanges 2 and near each eccentric is a do 11 the free end of which normally rests b gravity upon the ring. a
A clamping plate 12 cooperates with the strip 1 and has longitudinal angular ribs 13 of the same cross sectional contour as the depressions in the strip 1. Slots 1 1 are formed at regular intervals in the strip or plate 12 and are so located that, when the strip 1 and plate 12 are brought together,
the hooks '9 will project into the slots and drop into engagement with the lower walls thereof.
Stop pins 15 are connected to one of the flanges 2 and serve to limit the backward and downward movement of the hooks 9.
In applying the clamp to Wire fencing, the fencing F is placed between the strip 1 and the plate 12. The dogs 11 are disengaged from the notches 10 and the levers 7 are swung upwardly so that the eccentrics 6 will project the hooks-9 through the fencing and into the slots 14. The levers are then swung downwardlyand the eccentrics pull on the books so as to draw the plate 12 toward the strip 1 and clamp the fencing. The dogs, by dropping into the notches 10, will secure the hooks against movement to release the fencing.
As shown in Fig. 3, tongs 16 may be used for pulling the clamp and thus stretching the fencing. Each of the jaws of the tongs has a stud 17 and the two studs are adapted to enter openings in the plate 12 and the strip 1 as shown at 18 in Fig. 3. Chains 19 or the like are connected to the other end of the tongs and by pulling them, the tongs will tightly grip and hold the clam-p.
