To all whom it may concern:

lie it known that I, CHARLES L. S'riLns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg-Bands for Poultry, Birds, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved leg band for poultry, birds, etc, de signed particularly for the purpose of pro riding a Sll'l'lPlG, comparatively inexpensive, band or identification tag holder, which is adjustable in its application, may be attached and detached with facility, and will remain in position during ordinary wear, thus performing its required functions with facility and efiiciency.

The invention consists essentially in an integral band and tag holder designed and fashioned for the special purpose of strengthening the band, retaining the tag and securing the band on the leg, and to this end will be described and claimed in the following specification, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings one complete example of the physical embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the band being designed and arranged according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the band ready to be applied for use.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the band and holder, flattened out for convenience of illustration.

Fig. 3 is a plan View of the tag or label retained in the holder.

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the metallic blank from which the band is fashioned.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the locking portion of the band, as secured on the leg of a bird.

The band 1 and the tag holder 2 are made from an integral metallic blank, as seen in Fig. 1, and preferably the blank is of aluminum in order to furnish a band of light weight and one having smooth edges and bends to render the device comfortable and convenient in use. The band 1 is of the proper length and width for the purpose,

and the enlarged plate or portion 2 forming the holder is designed to retain the tag or identification marker 3, which, is preferably of celluloid. The retaining flanges 4, 4, at the upper and lower sides of the holder for the tag, not only retain the tag, but in addition, the added thickness of material along the edges of the tag holder, at 4-, 4c, lends rigidity to the soft metal, and the well braced tag holder, when bent or curved to conform to the leg of the bird, as shown in Fig. 1, supports and holds the band as a whole in proper condition.

The marking indicated at 5 on the tag or celluloid card, may be varied as usual, and the color of the tag or celluloid insert 3 may be changed for the proper indications in manner well known in poultry annals.

There are four tongues '6 illustrated as integral with the plate 2 which are bent over the celluloid tag to hold it in place and prevent puckering or bulging of the tag, and the short arm 7 of the band is fashioned with a pair of complementary tongues 8 that are bent over toward each other from their respective edges to form a securing loop through which the end of the band is passed to secure the band on the leg of a bird- An additional pair of tongues 9, also integral with the arm 7 and projecting from the sides thereof at the end, are utilized after the band has been passed through the loop, to turn down and clasp the end of the band.

In Fig. 5 the parts of the band for locking it in place are illustrated in locked position, and it will readily be seen that after the band of Fig. 1 has been placed in posi-- tion about the leg, the free end of the band is passed through the loop 8 and the band is adjusted, comfortably to the leg; then the free end of the band is turned back over the outside of the loop, and the tongues 9 are turned down and up respectively, to clasp over the end of the band thus securing the parts as indicated in Fig. 5.
