APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16.,19e9.

THOMAS F. BARTA, OF FISEK, NORTH DAKOTA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed June 16, 1919. Serial No. 304,458.
b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS F. BARTA, a citizen of the Unlted States of America, re-
siding at Pisek, in the county of 'Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a hinge in which the leaf extensions bent to provide the knuckles of the hinge sections are adapted to be passed through openings provided in the hinge plates with the terminal edges thereof secured beneath said plates.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a top plan viev of a hinge constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the hinge and a portion of a supporting structure showing the terminal edges of the knuckles of the hinge extending through the hinge plates,
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the hinge plates with the terminal edges of the knuckles removed from the slot in the hinge plate, one of the knuckles being broken away to show the plate slot,
Fig. at is a cross sectional view of a portion of one of the hinge plates with the hinge pintle in dotted line positions show ing the position of the plate knuckle be fore entering the plate slot, v
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the hinged plates showing the reversed side as disclosed in Fig. 3, i
Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the invention embodyingthe same features but showing two knuckle sections in a single hinge and Fig. 7 is an edge view of the hinge shown in Fig. 1.
Describing the invention more in detail, there is provided ahinge embodying similar leaf sections 8 having the usual openings 9 therein arranged in any desired for mation for the reception of screws 10 or like retaining means, the plate sections 8 being secured to the support 11 shown in Fig. 2 which may be any object that is desired to hingedly connect parts thereof together.
The knuckle of the hinge includes leaf extensions 12 arranged in spaced relation as shown in Fig. 3 providing alternate clearing spaces 13 for the cooperating leaf extension 12 of the other plate section 8 so that when the plate sections are united, the adjacent leaf extensions 12 are carried by the opposite hinged plates. in Figs. 3 and 5, the extensions are curved to substantially cylindrical form and carry tongues 14 at the terminal edges the of while the base of the sections 8 are provided with slots 15 beneath the extension 12 and through which the tongue 14: is adap ed to be extended and retained therein by 1'0. ing one face engage the beveled edge 15 of said slot, this arrangement being more clearly shown in Figs.v 2 and 4.
In assembling the hinged plate sections 8, the pintle 17 is inserted through the cooperating lmuckles 12 of the hinge as shown in Fig. 1 and the knuckles 12 are then moved into closer relationship with said pintle with the terminal ends or tongues 1?: projected through the plate slots 15 and when. so arranged, the resiliency thereof will cause the tongues to engage the beveled walls 16 As illustrated i of said slot to prevent displacement of said tongues and securely hold the knuckle ext tensions in their proper position surrounding the pintle 17. As illustrated in Fig. l, the pintle 17 is retained in position in the knuckle sections by thecotter pin 18.
A modified construction of the invention is shown in Fig. 6, but all the essential elementsare present therein, it being noted that in this form of construction, there is provided a three-plate hinge embodying a central section 19 and end. sections phi-- vided with the umial screw receiving openings 21 while the knuckles 12 are identical to the preferred construction, there being shown in dotted linesin this figure, tongue extension 14 upon the knuckles 12.
While I have herein shown r the preferred embodiments of my, in
tion, it will nevertheless be understood that minor changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of out departing from the spirit and scope o the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
A butt hinge comprising a knuckle havelined wall forming one side of said plate 10 slot adapted to be engaged by said extension. tongues. when the same are passed through said plate openings with the outer Wall of the slot spaced therefrom, a pintle inserted through the registering knn'ekles and means for retaining the bolt therein.
In testimony whereof ll ail ix my signature.
THOMAS F. BARTA.
