0. w. WETTER. PUNCH FOR EMBROIDERING MACHINE SI APPLICATION FILED OCT-12, I917] 1 ,320, 9478* Patented Nov. 4, 1919.

GALLEN, swi'rznnnenn.
PUNCH FOR EMBROIDERINGr-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed October 12, 1917. Serial No. 196,280}.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns lVILLIAM WETTER, a citizen of the Republic of Swit zerland, residing at St. Gallen, Switzerland, have invented certain newand useful Iniprovements in Punches for Embroidering- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion. a
This invention relates to punches or stilettos for embroidering machines, and comprises a stiletto-shaped body portion having a needle extension from the apex of the stiletto, for the purpose of coloring or dyeing designs on the fabric.
By reason of this arrangement only the stilettos need be changed to perform two operations instead of one, the various opcrating mechanisms remaining unchanged, so that the same mechanism for operating the stilettos for rounding the eyelets will also be used for producing the color effects I in the design.
The needle extension applies the color to the fabric; it first passes into a color-carrying ribbon and receives therefrom a charge of color, which is left on the fabric as the needle is withdrawn. When an embroidered eyelet is enlarged the rail carrying the stiletto is moved a greater distance toward the fabric, the needle extension passing through the already embroidered eyelet into the color ribbon, and the stilletto portion enters the eyelet and rounds it. Upon withdrawal of the stiletto the me dle is withdrawn from the enlarged eyelet opening Without coloring it.
Referring to the drawings in which like parts are similarly designated- Figure 1 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale and partly in section of a stiletto having a color-carrying needle inserted in its point, and
Fig. 2 is a like view showing the needle extension and stiletto body in one piece.
' to fabric to be embroidered in embroidering machines, the part having the form of a needle piercing through the means carrying the color and transferring the latter from said means to the fabric to be embroidered. The holes produced in the means carrying the colors are therefore much smaller than is the case when the punch or stiletto is made conical up to its end. In consequence of this, said means may be used for a longer time. The punch or stiletto made according to this invention may also be used for perforating certain special kinds of fabric, for instance tulle. Stilettos or punches which taper up to their point frequently tear such. fine fabrics when they are inserted too far into these fabrics. This is not the case when punches according to this invention are used.
I claim 1. A fabric coloring and eyelet shaping stilleto for embroidering machines, comprising a substantially conical stiletto body havin a substantially cylindrical extension from the apex thereof both adapted to enter the fabric.
2. A fabric coloring and eyelet shaping stiletto for embroidering machines, comprising a substantially conical stiletto body having a substantially cylindrical pointed extenslon from the apex thereof for carrying color, both body and extension adapted to enter the fabric.
3. A fabric coloring and eyelet shaping stiletto for embroidering machines, comprising a smooth, tapered eyelet shaping stiletto body and a needle inserted in the apex of said body and projecting therefrom said needle carrying color from a color supply to the embroidered fabric, both the needle and the stiletto adapted to enter the fabric.
4:. A fabric coloring and eyelet shaping stilletto for einboridering machines, comprising an eyelet-shaping conical stilletto body and an eyeless color-carrying needle projecting from the apex thereof, said nee- 10 dle for applying color to the frabric, said body and needle adapted to enter the fabric.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name.
CHARLES WILLIAM VVETTER.
