` ELIZA D. HUNT, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,083, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA D. HUNT, of th city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Decomposing Gases in Goal-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a water-vessel made to fit the top of a stove of any design, the said vessel being provided with a tight cover, through which are inserted pipes that extend downward into the lire-chamber. Over this watervessel is a cap or cover, made to fit so as to cover the said water-vessel and inclose the same Within the lire-box. The whole apparatus is detachable, so that it may be readily removed and replaced, as may be desired.
To enable others skilled in the 'art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The ligure represents a common cylinderstove with my invention applied.
A represents a common cylinder-stove with the upper portion broken out so as to show` more clearly the arrangement of my inventio'n. B may represent the door of the stove. C represents the water-vessel, made tapering; or it may be made of equal dimensions from top to bottom, and of any suitable material, so as to hold water. To this water-vessel C is fitted a cover as tight as may be, but not necessarily steam-tight, especially when under pressure. a a, a, represent small tubes or pipes that lead from the inner side of the water-vessel through the cover downward into the fire-chamber. D is a cap or cover, made the same size of the cylinder of the stove, that sits loosely over the top of the stove so that it brings the vessel within the hre-chamber.
My invention can be applied to any kind of stove, and has for its object the decomposition of the gases arising from burning coal of any kind and escaping into the room and poisoning the inmates thereof.
I may here state that my invention may readily be applied or attached to the common cooking-stove or range by taking a short cylinder or pipe-say six or eight inches 'in length a little larger than one of the holes on the top of the stove, and on it place the vessel of water and pipes, as before described. The result is, that as steam or vapor arises from the vessel it is conducted down through the tubes into the lire-chamber and min gles with the gases generated from the coal, and, to a great extent, decomposes them so that no injurious effects are produced from them.
Having thus described my invention, whatv ELIZA D. HUNT.
