E. F. HAPPENSACK.
PLIERS. APPLICATION FILED MAY23, 1919- 1,329,542: Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
EDWARD I. HAPPENSLAOK, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOB TO THE I. SCHIRIVEB,
COMPANY, OF CINCHQ'NATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO. K
PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 23, 1819. Serial No. 299,205.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, EDWARD F. HAPPEN- SACK, a citizen of the United, States of America, and a. resident ofCinciimati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pliers for use particularly in working with chains such as pump chains. In such uses it frequently is necessary to increase the size of the links of the chains in order to couple them to various parts of the pumps.
The object of my invention isto increase the spreading capacity of a pair of pliers without increasing the spread of the tool.
This object is attained by the means described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanyin drawing, in which Figure 1, is a si e elevation of'a pliers embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, 1s a similar view of a pliers embodying my invention but showing it in a different position.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a pliers embodying my invention showing it entering a link of small diameter.
Fig. 1, is a view similar to Fig. 3,'but showing the pliers in position to spread the link shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the liers with the link spread as indicated'in ig. 4, pre aratory to spreading it to a still greater egree.
Fig. 6, is a perspective view showing my pliers in position to compress a link.
The tool has the usual lever arms A, A, fulcrumed together at a, and shaped so as together to form a tapered nose.
The nose terminates in lu a a Spaced from the lugs a, a are Iiigs a a, which form an enlarged seat for the reception of a ring or link to be spread to a greater extent than it could be spread by the smaller seat, formed by the In s a, a
In use if one desires to spread a llnk from a small to a large diameter, he first inserts the nose into the link so that the smaller seat engages the inner periphery of the link. After having spread the link to the full capacity of the smaller seat, he inserts the nose farther into the link so that it takes into the larger seat formed by the lugs a, a, and then spreads the link to the size desired.
I provide the lever arms with the usual internal seat a by seating the link in which it may be compressed, as shown in Fig. 6.
What I claim is A pliers having a tapered nose terminating in lugs forming a seat and having spaced from said lugs other lugs formmg an enlarged seat for a ring to be enlarged.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 21st day of May, 1919.
EDWARD F. HAPPENSACK.
