PLANT FOR FEEDING PULVERIZED COAL TO FURNACES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'JosEPH E. KENNEDY,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city,-county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plants for Feeding Pulverized Goal to Furnacs, of which the following is a specification.
While ap licable to the feeding of pulverized coal to furnaces generally, my coal .reducing and feeding plant is designed more particularly for use on marine vessels, the main object being the provision of a self-contained system whereby the raw coal is H121; nipulated continuously from and including the crusher to the combustion chamber of the furnaces, as hereinafter more fully set forth, described, and claimed specifically, a distinctive feature being the utilization of the waste products of. combustion from the boiler to effect the elimination of moisture from the crushed coal prior to its introduction into the pulverizer. By waste products of combustion I herein mean those that have already performed the function of heating th water in the boiler, and that would otherw ,be discharged with loss of heat which it is my purpose to save and utilize as a means of drying the fuel preparatory to its introduction in pulverized state into the furnace of the boiler from which such waste prod nets are derived. 7 In the accompanying drawings,

through the chute e, to the upper end of the gravity drop drier D, through which it descends in a tortuous course to the conduit 03, which delivers it to a pulverizerP, preferably of the type set forth in my concurrent application Serial No. 215,052, filed -Feb. 2, 1918. The reduction mechanism within the pulverizer P, is actuated by the motor P, through the medium of the power shaft p, in the usual manner.
In its descent through the drier D the coal passes through an upward current of the hot otherwise waste gaseous products of com bustion derived from .the boilers, and diverted into the drier D, from the bottom of the stack 6, through the lateral flue 6 to return to the stack 6, from the upper part of the drier D, through the flue b Suitable dampers 12*, 6 ,12 in the stack 6, and branch flues b 6 control and regulate the flow of these waste gaseous products of combustion through the drier D, said products passing off finally through the stack 1), and taking with them the moisture extracted from the broken coal in the drier D.
Thus by closing the damper 19*, more or less in the lower part of the main stack 6', and opening the dampers b and Z), in the lateral fiues b 71 more or less, more or less of the heated gaseous products of combustion may be diverted through the drier D, as may be found most'expedient; and to facilitate this action a forced draft may be induced by a blower F, driven by a motor F, arranged to inject air upward under pressure into the main stack 6, above the upper lateral flue 6 in a manner well known in the art.
As set forth in my concurrent application heretofore referred to a forced circulation of air under pressure is maintained through the pulverizer P, and collectors Q, Q, and conduits p, p, p by any suitable means, as by the exhaust fan F and motor F The comminuted coal collected in the cyclones Q, Q, is delivered through conduits g, g, to the feed trough T, the screw conveyer t, of which is actuated by the motor T, and gears t t The feed trough T, is positioned over the series of hoppers H, and provided with a series of gates 25", t coincident therewith and for the control of the feed of pulverized coal to said hoppers H, H, individually and collectively. The lower portion of each hoptaken directly from the ships bunkers and by a continuous, substantially automatic process, reduced, dried, commmuted and fed as required to the furnace or furnaces, the
' whole plant being compact and complete in I this respect and in every particular.
- While adaptable for use for various other purposes, my plant is especially eflicacious for stok-ing marine boilers, since the vessel provided therewith will not be dependent upon pulverized coal supply stations at its various ports of entry. but can shipv the coal in the rough state, and comminute it as required for immediate use, thus overcoming the main difliculty heretofore experienced in the-employment of pulverized coal as a fuel for marine boilers.
Furthermore the coal thus freshly crushed dried, and pulverized, and introduced difrom the boiler of the furnace to be fedd for the purpose of drying the crushed coal immediately prior to its further reduction in the pulverizing apparatus is an important factor in rendering tho-plant effective. In fact this utilization of'ythese waste gaseous products of combustionis the essential feature which enables me to attain. in a relatively small and compact area. a continuous system and process for the reduction of the bunker coal to a pulverized fuel for practically immediate injection into the furnace or furnaces as set forth; and the heat thus conserved represents a material saving in the cost of production of such comminuted fuel.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that miners run bunker coal. fed to the crushing apparatus C, is delivered by the latter through the chute c, to the bottom of the elevator E, by which latter it is transferred through the chute c. to the top of the drier D, through which it discards waste products of combustion derived from the boiler B. to the pulverizer P, through the conduit (1, the pulverized material being carried by air pressure to the. collectors Q, Q, by which it is delivered to the feed trough T, which delivers the fuel thus prepared to the hoppers H, H, which in turn deliver it through the, spouts h, to air blast nozzles 71?, by which itds injected into the furnaces. Thus, by a continuous process and sequence of connected-" o" erations, rough bunker coal, by the utllization of the heat of waste gaseous products of combustion derived from the boiler or boilers, is rendered fit for, introduction and consumption in the furnace or furnaces of the very boiler or boilers from which such otherwise waste products of combustion are withdrawn.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A fuel feed plant of the character designated, comprising a boiler and furnace, means for crushing raw coal and transferring it to a gravity drop drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the waste gaseous products of combustion from said boiler therethrough, means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizing means and means for injecting the dried and pulverized coal under air blast into the furnace of the boiler from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A fuel feed plant of the character designated, comprising a boiler and furnace, means for'crushing raw coal and transferring it to a gravity drop drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the waste gaseous products of combustion from said boiler therethrough. means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizi'ng means, means for delivering the dried and pulverized coal to a hopper, said hopper and air blast means for injecting the pulverized coal therefrom into the furnace of the boiler from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A fuel feed plant of the character .designated, comprising a plurality of boilers and furnaces, means for crushing raw coal and transferring it to a gravity drop drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the waste gaseous product of combustion from said boilers therethrough, means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizing means and means for delivering the pulverized coal to a conveyer, a plurality of hoppers communicating with said conveyer, and air blast means for injecting the pulverized coal from said hoppers into the furnaces of the boilers from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A fuel feed plant of the character designated, comprising a plurality of boilers and furnaces, means for crushing raw coal and transferring it to a gravity drop' drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the Waste gaseous product of combustion from said boilers therethrough, means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizing means and means for delivering the pulverized coal to a conveyer, a plurality of hoppers communicating with said conveyer, and air blast means for injecting the pulverized coal from said hoppers into the furnaces of the boilers from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel, to gether wit-h means for controlling the flow of dried and pulverized coal into said hoppers and from said hoppers into the furnaces, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A fuel feed plant of the character designated, comprising a boiler and furnace, means for crushing raw coal and transferring it to a gravity drop drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the waste gaseous products of combustion from i said boiler therethrough, means for creating a forced draft of said waste gaseous products of combustion through said gravity drop drier, means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizing means and means for injecting the dried and pulverized coal under air blast into the furnace of the boiler from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel as and for the purpose set forth.
6. A fuel feed plant of the character designated, comprising a boiler and furnace,
means for crushing raw coal and transfera ring it to a gravity drop drier, said gravity drop drier and means for diverting the waste gaseous products of combustion from said boiler therethrough, means for creating a forced draft of, and for regulating the flow of, said waste gaseous products of combustion through said gravity drop drier, means for delivering the coal from the drier to pulverizing means, said pulverizing means and means for injecting the direct and pulverized coal under air blast into the furnace of the boiler from which the waste products of combustion were derived to dry the fuel as and for the purpose set forth.
- 7 In a fuel feed plant of the character designated, means for drawing the hot gases from the combustion chamber through a shunt pipe, passing them through a tower drier, and returning them to their source, together with means for passing coal through said tower drier to thepulverizing mechanistrn.
8. The method herein described of preparing and feeding pulverized coal to a boiler furnace, consisting in subjecting the crushed coal to a current of waste gaseous products of combustion derived from the boiler to eliminate the moisture from said crushed coal, pulverizing the coal thus dried, and injecting it by means of air blast into the furnace of the boiler from which said Waste products of combustion. were derived, substantially as set forth.
