To all whom it may concern.'
` Be it known that I, ANDREW H. Mo- DOUGALL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cupola VariableTwyers, of which the following is a specification. y y
This invention relates to twycrs forcupola furnaces. The object of the invention is to provide a twyer construction for such a furnace in`which`the side walls of the twyer can be shifted at the will of the operator to vary the `size of the twyer opening and thus `soften or strengthen the character of the current of air passing through the twyer asthe material melting or other conditions may require. The invention consists in means for carrying out the foregoing obj eets, which can be easily and cheaply made, which is satisfactory in operation and is not readily liable to get out 0f order. `More particularly, the invention consists in the features and details of construction hereafter more fully setiv forthin the specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar numerals indicate the same parts throughout the several views,

The mechanism of this invention may be applied to any conventional form of cupola furnace having the usual side wall 10 made from any suitable material, and equipped on the outside with the usual wind-box or l wind-boxes 12, shown for convenience only in Fig. 2, adapted to supply air under pressure to the twyers. Arranged around the circumference of this furnace are a plurality of lower twyer openings 14, equipped with the mechanism of this invention. Each lower twyer which forms one of the openings 14: just described, .comprises a lower base plate 16, having rising from it a post 18 on which the upper twyer plate 20 rests at its middle, and a pair of side plates or blocks 22 adapted for adjustment in the Wait until the end of the Week and to space between the plates 1G and 20 with reference to the post 18. `The plates 1G are, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, embedded in the material of wall 10 and supported thereby through the length of the plates, while upper plates 20 are of greater length than any twyer opening 14- so that their ends are, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, always supported in the material of wall 10.
In actual practice, these parallel plates 16 and 20 are soembedded in the material of wall 1() that they are self-sustaining without the presence of the wall blocks 22. Up-
per plate 20 is provided with a notch 24V 1n which upperftwyer member 26, forming no part of this invention, but of conventional construction, enters and is supported in the manner shown in the drawings. `The blocks 22, heretofore described, are provided with projecting lugs 28 which rest upon plate ..16 and with lugs 30 which bear against the underside of plate 20 so as to give the blocks 22 sufficient bearing in all positions which they may be placed to pevent their tipping over and falling down. 4
Vhen a large twyer opening isrequired, the operator places the blocks 22 in the position shown at 84, 1, and then, by hand, fills in the spaces 36 behind the blocks with cement or other material of wall 10 so that the nished twyer is of the construction shown at 36, Fig. l. When, now, the operator desires to reduce the area of twyer opening 14, he takes some sort of a tool, as for instance a hammer, and knocks the blocks 22 out of the position with reference to their respective posts 18 in which they appear at points 36 and 38, and replaces them at a changed angular position with reference to their respective posts, as for instance that shown at point 38, Fig. 1, in which the twyer opening is very much narrower.
The operator now cements in back of these blocks and the twyer is finished in this position unt-il the operator again desires to change it, in which case he again knocks out blocks 22 and the filling behind them, and after repositioning the blocks as he wants them, again fills in behind the blocks.
The important feature of this invention is that the twyer opening or openings may be changed any night when the cupola is being put in shape for the next day, whereas in the prior constructions, it is necessary to ave at least a day in which to 'take out the brick-work and make the necessary changes to put in twyer castings. By the device of this invention, the workmen can vary the intensity of the blast from day to day without the use of new twyers.
One important feature lies in the fact that the two side plates 22 which are removable are also made with the top side tapered so that the man changing the angularity of these sides can by knocking them back with the hammer immediately free them from .the top and bottom plates. This makes them more readily movable and the plate not liable to bind and break by violet exertion in moving them and when they are moved to the new angle this wedge effect of the side plate allows him to tap them securely in place so that ramming,` in the lining` back of them does not disturb their position.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of independently supported upper and lower twyer plates spaced apart at predetermined distances, Vand a block forming a side wall for the twyer 'opening insertible between said upper and lower plates in selected positions, forthe purposes set forth.
2, In combination with a wall of a furnace, parallel upper and lower twyer plates spaced apart in an opening in the furnace wall and independently supported thereby, a side wall block insertiblein the s race between the twyer plates and selectively movable to different positions along the lengths of said upper and lower plates to vary the twyer opening, for the purposes set forth.
3. In mechanism of the class described, an upper twyer plate, a lower twyer plate pa. 'allel thereto, a post intermediate be tween the ends of said twyer plates separating them one from the other, means at other points along the lengths of the twyer plates permanently holding them spaced parallel one from the other, and a movable wall member insertihle between the twyer plates adapted to be placed in different angular positions with reference to said post, for the purposes set forth.
4f. In combination with a wall of a furnace, parallel upper and lower twyer plates spaced apart'in an opening in the furnace wall and independently supported thereby, a side wall block with tapered top insertible in the space between the twyer plates and selectively movable to different positions along' the lengths of said upper and lower plates to vary Vthe twyer opening, for the purposes set forth.
