Description

S.. M. FALES.
Cupela Furnace. No. 22,861. y Patented Feb. 8, 1859.
l l I l PATENT OFFICE.
SQUIRE M. FLES, OF BALTIMORE,'MARYLAND.
IMPROVED FURNACE FOR SIVIELTING IRON'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22,861, datedV February 8, 1859.
To all whom, t may concern..-
Be it known that I, SQUIRE M. FALEs, of the city of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved mode of constructing furnaces for melting and refining cast-iron for making castings, also ores of various kinds; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying model and drawings, and to the letters annexed to the different parts thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in connecting with the cone of a furnace one or more arched recesses or chambers, with openings in the crown of the arch for the introduction from the outside of any iiuxes necessary to make the furnace work properly, through which the blast is made to circulate before it rises into cone of the furnace, instead of passing, as heretofore, directly upward, thereby imparting to the metals or ores new qualities, and enabling them to be converted into a better description of metal, and at` the same time consuming much less fuel; also, in introducing a movable tymp, to be applied to the outer ends of the arched recesses or chambers, instead of the permanent tymp now in use, which movable tymp is keptin place by a cross-bar, that can be removed at pleasure for the purpose of repair.
ing or cleaning the furnace.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawv ings.
These drawings, which I wish to be considered as a part of this specification, represent a furnace as improved by my invention in three different aspects.
A A represent my arch as it passes through the structure below the bosh of the cone, and projects on each side of the furnace, so as to form the arched recesses or chambers to which I have alluded, whereby the blast is made to circulate and impart new qualities to the metal before it re-enters the cone, instead of being forced immediately upward as in the ordinary :model` B B represent the movable tymp, by which the external openings of the arch are closed, and which can be removed at pleasure for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the furnace, l
instead of the permanent tymp fixed, as at present, in the sides of the furnace. vIt will be seen at a glance that these three improvements, for which I claim Letters Patent, may be introduced 'at will into any of the furnaces now in use.
C denotes the dam-stone upon which the Y arch at the points J, whereby fluxes necessary to promote the properworking of the furnace are introduced, instead of being thrown, as at y present, into the cone.
K represents the bottom of the furnace. l L denotes the cone. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the ordinary furnace, of the arched chambers or recesses at the sides of the furnace, as herein described, the opening in the crown'of the arched recess or chamber, as set forth, and the movable tymp at the external openings of the arched chambers or recesses, as specified.
