Description
@uitrit tntrs datent HENDERSON ROSS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANA.
Letters Patent No. 73,931, dated January 28, 1868.'
IMPROVEMENT IN PUDDLING-PURNAGES.
i @la Srlgrhule rrfrmh in in llnst @titers @anni mit mating part at tige tame.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, HENDERSON ROSS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consistsin providing a furnace with a. detached metallic with a water-chamber. vMyinvention also consists in providing the furnace with a metallic neck or throat, and stack or chimney, said neck and stack being furnished with water-chambers, the Wholebeing constructed, arranged, and operating, substantially in the manner and forl the purpose hereinafter described..
To enable others skilled in the ar't to makeand use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. 1n the accompanyingjdrawings, which form part of my specifications- Y Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section of my improvement in neck and stack of an ordinary puddling-furnace.
Figure 2 represents a transverse section of the stack when cut through at line x of iig. l.
Figure 3 represents a transverse section-of the neck of the furnace when cut through at line x of iig. 1.
In theV drawings, A represents the detached metallic clamp, which is provided with a water-chamber marked in. B represents the lower part of the stack or chimney, furnished with a water-cl1amber, n, D, the width of the door being equal to the breadth of the neck of the furnace. C represent the sides of the neck, which are provided with water-chambers, o, which are connected with the water-chambers n of the stack.
The water-chambers of the clamp, neck, and stack must beprovided with suitable pipes for supplying them with water, and also pipes for carrying olf the heated or waste water. The arrangement of these supply and wastepipcs, andthe means for cleaning out the water-chambers I leave tethe skill andjudgment of the mechanic.
The dotted lines in iig. 1 are used for the purpose of showing the relationof-my improvement to the balance of` the furnace. 1 represent.` the crown of the furnace, 2v represents the bridge-wall, 3 represents the grate-bars,
4 represents the bottom plate, 5 represents the bosh, and 5 represents the form of the bottom of the neck, all
of which are constructed in the usual manner and with the ordinary material. The back end, and that portion of the crown of the furnace directly over the fire-chamber z2, I propose making of iron, and furnishing it with y a water-chamber, as indicated by the dotted lines marked x3, which device Ipropose making the subject of another application for Letters Patent, and therefore will not at present further describe it. The upper part of l the stack of the furnace-may be constructed of brick or iron, with the bottom course of fire-brick lining resting on the offset marked c, shown in fig. 1, or the whplc stack may be constructed with the chamber 1t extending from the betteln to the top of it. The door D is provided with a flange, z', for supporting and holding brick lining. This door is used for the purpose of alfording a ready opening for cleaning out the neck or throat of the furnace. The ferm, size, and the manner ofco-nstructing the` several parts of my improvement, I leave to the judgment of the mechanic. 1t willreadily be observed that the sides C and clamp A may be so constructed as to form onepart, with a single water-chamber, therefore I do not confine my invention to making the. ncekor throat of the furnace in several parts.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: Water is conveyed inte the different chambers at the lowest point, and carried off at the highest point. By thus supplying and carrying olf the water, the chambers will always be kopt full of cool water. The stack B, with its chamber 1t, may be used for generating steam, which may be utilized for any desired purpose.
The advantages of my improvement consist in saving brick, time, and cost of repairing the neck of the furnace. `vThe `action of the furnace when provided with my improvement will alwaysbe uniform, which is a very great desidcrutum, and especially so in furnaces used for the manufacture of iron and steel. i
Having thus described the'nature, construction, operation, vclaim as of my invention, is-
clamp furnished and a door,
and advantages of my improvement, what Iv 1. A water-clamp for furnaces, constructed, arranged, and operatingisnb stantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth.
2. Surrounding the neck or throat with water, substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth` HENDERSON ROSS.
Witnesses H. E. Davis, JAMES J. JonNsToN.
