Lezama Application lel April 7, 1919.
1o aZZ whom imag/concern Be it knovvnthat I, `EDWARD B. Tomi., a citizen of the United States, residing, at Yakima, in the countyA ofYa'l-ima and: State of l/Vashington, have invented anevv land useful Truss, of which the following i'sa specification. i
rFhi's inventionv relates to trusses or rupture appliances not rub the person and which will be comfor-table to the same, in general,
A furthe-r object of the inventionV is to provide a rupture appliance Which embodies a novel truss block and pad which Will press upon the rupture and hold the same firmly and at the same time being comfortable to the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rupture appliance Which embodies an improved truss block and inflatable pad therefor, that Will obviate rubbing'or chaffing and adding to the co-mfort of the wearer generally. n
An additional object of the invention 1s to provide an appliance of the abo-ve described character Which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost. Y With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the combinations of elements, construe.A tions and formations, and general asse1nblage which Will hereinafter be fully set foith and claimed.
On the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of al truss constructed in accordance With my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional vievv of the same taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the'drawings Where in like characters Iof reference denote like parts, the numeral 5 denotes a truss block which has its opposite longitudinal sides tapered toward one end, the transverse ends of the block being rounded. This specific shape of block is not essential but it is articularly adapted to one type of Woun it being understood that different shapes of blocks are required for different types of Wounds.
Specification of Letters Patent.
the principal object being to provide a Vrupture appliance which will resented oer. 2e, 191e. seriaino,288,121.Y
is formed at the Wide end of the block 5 and at its concavedJ face and defines an overhangingWall'S. An opening 9 is provided in the overhanging. vvallV 8 which extends clear through the Wide end of the block 5.
An inflatable rubber' pad 1:0y is removably mounted `in theconcaved face ofthe block- 5 and' is provided' with the usualn ii'iating stem.11.. This initiatingA stem 11 isdisposed upon one side of the inflatable pad near its Wide end. The recess 7 accommodates the flange or collar of the inflating stem 11, the iniiating stem 11 being extended through the opening 9 and a cap 12 inserted upon the end of the same. the pad 10 is inflated the inner side thereof is slightly accommodated in the concaved face of the block 5.
AV securing belt 13 is attached to the outer face of the block 5 by a securing strap 14. The belt 13 is adapted to be passed around the Waist of the wearer and its ends secured together byI a buckle 13 mounted on one end of this belt. A band 15 has one end attached to the belt 13 and depends down- Wardly therefrom and is secured to the block 5 by fastening 17, the opposite end. of the band 15 being attached to the belt 13 at the rea-r of the same. Both the belt 13 and the band 15 are formed of elastic material.
The embodiment of the invention herein shown and described is considered the preferred construction, but it will be undenstood that the same is susceptible to various modifications, and that my limits of modiiication are only governed by the appended claims. K
What is claimed is 1. A surgical appliance comprising a truss block having its inner face concaved, an overhanging Wall disposed at one end of the concaved face, one end of the block being` provided with an opening which extends through the overhanging Wall, a pneumatic pad seated in the concaved face of the block including` an inflating stem, the inflating stem extending thro-ugh the opening in the overhanging Wall and contacting With the pneumatic overhanging pad. 2. In a surgical appliance, a truss block having its inner face concaved and further provided with a recess at one end thereof which defines an overhanging Wall, the wall being provided with an opening that eX- l/Vhen tends through one end of the block, an inflatable pad positioned in the concaved face olf the block, an inflating stein carried thereby and extending through the opening, a portion of the pad being accommodated in the recess, and means for securing the block to the wearer. Y
3. In a surgical appliance, a truss block. the block being provided with a concaved innerV face and further provided with a recess at one end thereof which defines an overhanging wall, the wall being provided with an opening which extends through the end of the block, an inflatable pad positioned in the concave face of the block, an infiating stem carried thereby and extending through the opening, the means for attaching the inflating stem to the pad being accommo- Copies of this patent may be obtained for dated in the recess, and means for securing the block to the wearer.
4. In a surgical appliance, an elongated block having'its inner face concaved, one end of the block being provided with an opening which is disposed substantially centrally of the opposed faces of the block and extends substantially parallel to these faces, an inflatable pad seated in the concaved face including an inflating tube which extends through said opening, almosttlie entire length of the stern being accommodated in the opening.
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
