Description

Patented June 1,1915.
Wanna/a JOSEPH HOEVATH, F CHERRY VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
LIFE-SAVING- SUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 35, 15.,
Application filed March 17, 1915. Serial No. 14:,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH HoRvArH, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Cherry Valley, in the county of Washing- ,ton' and State of Pennsylvania, have in- Kvented .certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Suits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in l fe savlng su ts. An. ObJGCt of the inventlon is to provide a life saving suit including a garment that is made of water-proof material and in simple construction and inexpensive to mani which an inflatable section is carried by the body portion of the garment and is adapted to be inflated by the wearer thereof. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a life saving suit that may be of ufacture and which may be easily and quickly put on and in which an inflatable member is permanently se red to the garment and carries an inflating member and a relief valve to control the amount of air within the same and also bracing means for limiting the separating movement of the side walls of the inflated member.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of the present invention and to which reference is had herein by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several designates the suit portion of the device which may be formed of rubber or suitable water-proof material and constructed to snugly engage the body of the wearer as indicated in section in Fig. 1. The breast portion of the garment is slitted and provided with lacing devices-11 to facilitate the correct positioning of the suit on the body of the wearer.
The buoyant device for holding the wearer of the suit on the surface of the water is clearly shown in cross sectional views as indicated and is formed of waterproof material similar to the garment 10, the same including side walls 12 terminating at their upper and lower ends in integral seam extensions 13 stitched as at 1e 7 to the garment 10. v In order to provide a clearance for the front lacing portion 11, the upper end of the buoyant member is formed'with a substantially U-shaped cut away portion 15 that is similarly secured to the body portion 10 as is the remaining portion of the device. Means are provided for strengthening the buoyant member and to also limit the separating movement of the side walls 12 and includes cords 16 secured at their ends to eyelets 17 carried by the inner faces of the walls 12, and more clearly shown in Fig. 2. An inflating device is provided for the buoyant member and includes the tube 18 having a suitable valve connection 19 with the buoyant member and passing through a stirrup 20 carried by the body portion 10 and continuing to provide a blowing non zle 21 as clearly indicated. A'relief valve or outlet 22 is formed in another portion of the buoyant member and constitutes means whereby the buoyant member may be deflated.
From the above description, it is believed that the operation of the device will readily apparent, and while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, 1 do not wish to confine myself to the exact details of constructinon shown, as various forms, modifications and arrangements oi the parts as shown may be had without departii the spirit and scope the 1352" on claimed.-
' What I claim. as n" The combination with. water-proof suit including a laced frontsection, of a buoyant member carried by the body portion thereof and extending between the shoulders and waist line, said buoyant member inchuii a pa.- of spaced side walls terminating at their upper and lower ends in an integral as I seam extension, a substantially U-shaped In testimony whereof I affix my signature 7 Queway pdrtion provided in the'front of in presence of two witnesses. 10 thefiggyant 1 member to provide a clearance foft e lac ingmdrtion of the garment, in- JOSEPH HORVATH.
